    Hey all,

Long time lurker from Minnesota finally coming on board. I'm starting a restore of my long-neglected (due to family commitments) 84 VF700F. Starting with carbs since it never ran entirely balanced for me, and then probably electrical to figure out why two cylinders cut out when it gets hot. I'll thank everyone in advance for all the amazing information shared here, and shared passion for these bikes. It's going to be slow - the potential parts list cost is a bit daunting - but I'll post in the appropriate sub as it goes.

    Thanks again,
    Jeff

    Welcome Jeff.
I hope that the restoration goes as smothy as possible.
How many miles on the clock, and did you buy it new?

Thanks for the welcome. It's got just over 36k miles on it. I'm the third owner, purchased at 29k miles with very light crash damage and a carb with a ripped diaphragm. Replaced that, tinkered a bit and it was a runner for a few years with basic maintenance needs. As mentioned it was never balanced properly and never ran as smooth as it really should.

It was garaged after the cylinder cutout issue. About 5 years ago I replaced pulse generator (new) and R/R (used) and tested a bit but it wouldn't hold idle so not to the temp level where the cutout happened. Set aside again and here we are today.

My plan is to (ideally) get the engine running well and check compression, then see what the extended list entails. Any general advice here is welcome, although I'll move details to the proper generation forum after reading a lot more :)

Side note, I agree with Mike the sound of these at full throat is addictive. Just the memory of the few times I really opened it up still shake the back of my skull.

Hey there and welcome Jeff!! Get a thread started in the 1st and 2nd Gen forum when you get going.

Your carbs need a FULL and proper going thru. You have to completely eliminate all of those variables before you move on. It's not "hard", it's tedious. Cross-over o-rings, insulators, etc.

If you haven't REALLY done it before but want to, start reading now. Then read again. Then read more. If you start half-assing it you're gonna forever chase your tail and you won't get much sympathy. Seen it many times.

Sqirrelman should be along shortly. He is a to-the-point dude, but he knows shit. He also rebuilds V4 carbs, professionally. Something to consider too.

Look forward to seeing your progress!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I've learned (the hard way, unfortunately) that doing things half-assed generally takes at least twice as much time, and costs twice as much in hassle and money :)

And now, off to reading the 1st & 2nd gen forum ...

Hi Jeff and Welcome to the Madhouse:Welcome:.

Good luck with the project - the key with these older VFRs is to take your time, do your research, and bag/photograph everything carefully, creating a missing parts list as you go. Then when you eventually get around to reassembling stuff you know what bits go with what.

You may want to update your forum profile to include a more specific location (City/town) in Minnesota so it appears with all your posts and if you need help you just might find someone living nearby is willing to swing by and offer advice or pick up a wrench especially if you have a well stocked beer fridge:drink:.

In the meantime enjoy the challenge and post up again if you need help.
