Hello fellow riders! I'll test the friendliness of the H20 by asking an amateurish question... I purchased my '98 VFR in Apr from a buddy. I love it so far. Only flaw...way too quiet. I want to look into an aftermarket pipe or slip-on that will enhance the sound a bit. Not too concerned about increasing HP necessarily, but if it does, that's cool, too. Is there any info in this club that details all the issues/requirements that go along with installing an aftermarket pipe or slip-on? Again, amateurish question. I'm mainly unclear about the need to install a PC or upgraded air filter if a new pipe/slip on is placed as I surf the webpages out there. Will gladly take recommendations on quality pipes that truly enhance the sound of this otherwise perfect beast.
exhaust Check out the forums for exhaust there are lots of threads on that topic. The saintunes seem to be the most popular.
Welcome to the group, sfpa. In the Modifications forum there is a thread titled exhaust clips. There are a few sound clips there that you can listen to. The PC and air filter will compliment the pipe, and vice versa. Each exhaust will have a different sound and it boils down to personal preference. I have a 93 with a D & D can and I love the sound. It sounds like a GTO class V-8 race car.
Thanks, Gents. Saw the exhaust tunes last night. This is a great website!! Still wondering one final question: Can I change the pipe alone without PC/Air filter? Most threads I found on this subject seem to suggest that "eventually" things will go wrong. If so, what goes wrong? Bottom line, do not want the full PC/airfilter/pipe exchange package, just want a deeper throatier sound from her....hoping that can be accomplished with pipe or slip on alone. Thanks again.
I ride a 98 also whick has 40000 miles on it with a stock air filter and stuff but a slip on 2bros. I'd say that rules out probs from a slip on with stock setup. having said that, I recently changed it to a k&n air filter and power commander so in another 10 or 20 thousand miles, I'll let you know about the reliability of that setup. I can tell you that rear tire wire seems quicker and the front end traction is less because the front tire lost weight with the upgrade.
Reg71, Thanks! How's the sound on that 2 Bros?? Did you install it? Difficult? How's the bike riding at 40K??? Hope I'm still in business with mine at 40K. I'm just now coming up on 16K. Mine was manufactured in GE and was brought back stateside by my fellow brother in arms. Not sure he rode it much here before selling it to me. (his loss!!)
I have no other mods other than the D & D can. I now have a stock sir filter, but it did have a K&N when I went to change it. Didn't know the K&N was in it, but I cannot tell a difference in power.
On a fuel injected anything, you will NEVER, EVER have an issue with a cat back exhaust. A PCII might help a bit but it is absolutely not necessary. On a fuel injected engine, the computer does not know it has a K&N filter with a D&D/TBR/Scorpion/Staintune/Micron/etc on it. It only knows (& cares) how much air is going into the engine & how much is then going out. It will change the fuel to suit. To put it into a simple example: You don't need to use a Power Commander if you live in Denver, Colorado (elevation 6000 ft) right? If you take the same VFR down to FayetNam, NC (elevation 200 ft) the same bike will run just fine & make more power there. Why? More/denser air is being ingested by the engine. The only reason my bike has a K&N air filter in it is because I got it for free. The only reason I have a pipe on it is to hear the V4 sing. KC-10 FE out...
Thanks! How long have you been an FE for an extender? Chances are we've actaully hooked up somewhere over the atlantic at some point!! at least once over the last 3-4 yrs. You guys rock.
Took me about 15 minutes. You'll need a 12mm wrench and a 13mm wrench, and something to hold the nut on the other end of the bolts. Piece o' cake. Regards, C
so, another amateur question, if I currently have a stock mount, and want to go with a high mount; will the purchase of a high mount typically include the s-pipe that is needed, or is that a separate purchase?
5 years & counting. We use AR636 off Norfolk all the time. Are you a pilot? I haven't heard of a 5th gen exhaust yet that didn't come with the mid pipe. KC-10 FE out...
No I am a PA working with Special Forces. I am constantly back and forth to Bagram AB all the time. The C-17's we fly on get IFR'd all the time going there and back, shortening our flights significantly. Thanks for that! Back to my exhaust questions, I know the 5th gens all come mid, I want a high-mount. Will the purchase of one include all necessary items, or do I have to purchase addtional items, i.e. an "s" pipe (I bet this will be deemed a really stupid question......I work on humans, not machines, but want to diversify....)
Yes, any exhaust is going to come with the correct pipe. Just make sure when you order it that it specifically says hi-mount. The only company I know that sells just the mid pipes is TBR or at least they used to. One thing to keep in mind, if you run a hi-mount, you can't run a saddle bad set up of any kind. That's why I don't have a hi-mount. I think the hi-mounts look much better but I have a set of Cortech sport saddle bags that I use and there is no way they would work with a hi-mount. That is a good food for thought, thanks. I will be sacrificing practicality for looks. I agree, it looks way better. I have been reading several posts that suggest they make the plastic and even the seat quite hot. Gonna have to think hard about that one...was really looking hard at a HM micron....now I might be headed for a mid.
