new chain prep question

    Morning:
    I'll be replacing the chain and sprockets on a 1998 today. My question is does the grease (I would guess packing grease) have to be removed from the chain. If I do remove it then I would suspect it would have to be lubed, no?

    You can remove the lube if you want since it would be much easier to do while it's off the bike.

    Almost all the chain makers recommend using kerosene. I've used it will success but it does make a mess. If you do use kerosene, make sure it's completely dry before lubing. The kerosene will eat any lube it gets near.

    Any of the big name chain cleaners will work as long as they are advertised as o-ring safe.

    Pick any o-ring lube you like but don't put it on until the chain is on & ready to go. It's much less messy to work on that way.
