Whelp....SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE!!!!! As was expected by many (myself included), the new law is now being largely ignored by it seems like everybody in San Diego County (and SF when I was up there) besides myself and my gf I believe. Hmmmmm....how surprising...well, I cannot say I had a "little" hope that a few more people would stay off the phones....not expecting all, just more than it is now. Nope, it was law came about, most people stayed off of them for a week or two, then back to normal.

The governator just signed a bill to make texting illegal (probably tipped over the scale because of the LA train wreck)...well, good luck enforcing that.

Oh well, what can ya do....live life and try to survive in the sea of cell phone chatting/texting cages.... :behindsofa:

yeah. just what we need another law. I mean really if we keep dictating laws for everything stupid people do, it will never end. the next thing you know you will have no freedoms left.

by the way, do not shower with your hair dryer...it says so on the tag.

Is it a primary or secondary stop for the police?

Utah passed a law that basicly says the police can stop you if you are breaking another traffic law AND talking on the phone. But if you're just on the phone it's not against the law. And just to make it even more useless, they added a clause that says SPEEDING can't be one of the other traffic violations. Then they made the code so it's just one step below reckless driving. I don't want to destroy someones insurance rate just because they forgot to signal while talking on the cell phone. But it's ok if they talk on their phone while going 90. /boggle

Sure I'm supposed to enforce the laws, but some just don't make sense. I'm all for making it illegal to talk and drive, the studies are there to prove that it's dangerous, and I've seen it first hand. But how about we make laws that can be enforced.

What did you expect? Everyone in Cali also drives 90 on the freeways through the city! It's hard to enforce laws that most people think they are above or don't apply to them.

In Ca. its a means for stopping and citing just as seat belts are, no extra reason needed.

I can only assume all of the people I've seen pulled over recently have been talking on their cell phones or obstructing traffic. I'm certain that they could not have been speeding.

It has been illegal to drive and use a cell phone for a while now on this side of the pond but it doesnt make any difference, i see people all the time chatting away while driving !
The only thing i have noticed is ( and this isnt sexist in any way ) that it seems to be women more than men that are still using their phones.
I dont know if its just a general ignorance or if people just dont give a shit as to how dangerous it is to use your phone while driving

Here's my thing. Isn't it legit to stop someone for careless and imprudent driving? Isn't talking on a cell that? Do we need another law or doesn't C&I cover it. Isn't that why there is discretion? My father in law who is retired CHP says some laws are asshole laws. He says they are there so you can cite someone if they are an asshole but you don't necessarily enforce them otherwise.

i 'm all for the ban I used to talk, smoke and drink coffee all at the same time while steering with my knee...... now that it is illegal I don't use my phone. the funny part that I see is people holding their phones up using the speaker phone function and holding it to thier ear. IMO the law is "hands free," which means no phone in your hand, not just not holding it up to your ear. the act of TALKING on the phone is what the distraction is, not the holding of the phone. The conversation is what is removing your attention away from what you should be thinking about. oh and to bring this back to the original post. yeah, a lot of people are ignoring the new law.

I will agree that the government makes way to many laws too protect us from ourselves, that said my new job requires me to spend a lot of time on the phone while driving, since I moved to California I had too invest in a Bluetooth, after three weeks with the Bluetooth it would be hard for me to go back too life with out it, the hands free law defiantly made me a safer driver...

No State with these no cell phone/ texting laws will vigouresly enforce them until some politicians kid or kids die in a spectacular crash of fire and explosions as a result of texting/ cell phone chatting.

Then...and only then they might start to be enforced.

This is an extremely valid point. Not all, but most people, for whatever reason cannot focus on their driving while talking on the phone, yet there seems to be little problem with them carrying on a conversation to someone sitting next to them in the vehicles. Can't figure that one out.
