Just got brand new '07 25th anniversary and started reading, maybe too much. Still have emaculate '03 R1 LE(black/flames) and 29000 awesome miles, but I'm getting long in the tooth and think maybe I need to slow down and enjoy the scenary, but not too much, that's why the VFR and not a Gold Wing. Anyway, all this r/r stuff and wiring gremlins have me wigged out, so what to do first. VFRness, blue connector fix, maybe relocate r/r. What do you guys think? I don't want to get stranded. I wanna ride!
Yes, there is a somewhat higher incidence of failure of these R/R's, but really overall the bike is reliable. Anyway they don't fail out of the box, but maybe could possibly fail after thousands of miles. Don't sweat it so much. Ride the bike, be happy, and maybe over this winter (or next) order the parts and enjoy working on your bike. Enjoy your new ride! PS - I have logged ~55k miles on 3 VFRs and never replaced a R/R....
don't stress buddy, she's just as reliable as any other bike on the market. I don't think your brand new '07 has anything to worry about. It was the earlier models that had high failure rates. Welcome to the forum!
WELCOME!! I've seen a recent post. I tink it's titled "how to save your R/R". It must be informative since there have been about 80 recent posts. Good luck..... I think that a lot of the 2007s have been sold with the original battery which may have been sitting for a long time. I would be concerned about the reliablity of a battery delivered under these circumstances. Should the battery require more from the charging system I believe this may be the root of the cause of a lot of 2007 r/r failures. Just a thought and maybe a place to start your search. A great number of VFR's seem to have no problems at all and others have nothing but problems. Mine is a 2002 and I've been good. Lucky maybe. I try to ensure the electrics are good as a "whole". Pre ride checks and routine regular inspections. An ounce of prevention......
Maybe I missed the boat, but I havn't heard of any unusual R/R related issues from '06 going forward. '02-'05 seem to have been the problem years. All I know for sure is that I've got nearly 19K miles on an '08 and my R/R tested perfectly last August.
Yeah, these forums can really mess with your head. I do the same thing. Bought and extra R/R, its in the garage just in case. But just ride it, odds are you won't have a problem. My 86 has 38k on it with an original R/R and my 01 has 25k on her orignal R/R. Ride safe.
On November 19, 2010 in a thread posted by CandyRedRC46 titled “now its over charging……” regarding R/R problems with a 2007 VFR you replied….... ....…..”When I was having similar issues of my own I also considered many aftermarket solutions. Of course the dealership suggested that when it comes to electrical, I buy OEM only. I was obviously skeptical accepting that advice so I did some very in depth research by way of getting as many experiences as possible from other riders, both through the groups that I ride with and online accounts from several sites. I did, eventually, end up using all OEM and I'm glad that I did. Knowing what you have been through with your machine and aftermarket parts and the similarities that it shares with numerous experiences that others have shared with me, I would have to say that aftermarket electrical seems a waste of time and money; even after I consider the fact that Hondas parts aren't ideal either”................... If your 08 went on the road with proper dealer prep within a reasonable time from date of manufacture I would think you should not be concerned with the battery or the R/R. Boat or no boat. (respectfully) However, a lot of 07's have been sent "out the door" with the OEM battery. I would have concerns about the battery. A bad battery can lead to R/R problems, burnt harness and connectors.
bought my 07 in Sept of 07 ...... battery started having issues in Sept of 2010.. new battery is going to happen in february
06 VFR800A with all the original eelctrical stuff still on board including the battery. 115,000 km or 71,500 miles and no signs of any problems. You should be fine with what you have as you have it. ANd I run heated gear in the winter too, along with HID lights. BTW....welcome. No go out, throw your leg over the bitch and rider her. That what they are built for. Where you at anyways? These things run just fine in the cold and rain too.
Candys experience with his '07 seems to be an aberration. You'll notice that in my post I never mentioned the R/R, that's because my issue was with the stator. I was simply passing advice that I received from numerous sources regarding the overall electrical system and the use of aftermarket parts as replacements. Seemed obvious to me.
I have a 2007 with 9500 miles. The R/R is under the right front corner of the gas tank, kind of out in the open not under seat. No problems so far. When I bought mine in Sept. of '08' I asked about the battery being in storage with the bike. My local Honda shop said they take all the batteries out of all the bikes that come in and put in a fresh one when the bike is prepped for sale. That way it keeps all the batteries rotating and everybody gets a new one. I use a Battery Tender 24/7 so the charging system does not have to work hard to bring the battery back to being fully charged. I did a five day 1700 mile ride by myself this summer and the VFR was flawless the whole time, didn't even need a chain adjustment. Don't Worry! Just Ride!!
Thanks for the ultra timely replies to my concerns. I probably have been reading too much, just trying to overload myself with info on the new ride. BTW Randy I'm from Knoxville, Tn. I'll eventually add pics as I figure it out, I'm not the sharpest computer nail.
I have an 02 w/ 20,000+ on her and no issues at all and nothing has been updated or replaced. no worries mate, just ride.
