Howdy - 3 days ago I put a new Barnett Kevlar clutch kit (friction plates, steels, springs) in my 91' and I freaking love it so far.

Installation went pretty smoothly, basket had some wear (I'm almost at 40k) so I filed the wear down a bit. I tried to minimize the chance of screwing something up by not removing anything that I didn't have to.

At some point though I accidentally slid the Clutch Lifter Plate Bearing and Clutch Lifter Plate Guide out, which gave me the opportunity to look behind it. I noticed that there was some damage to the part that sits behind it (Spring Washer), see the left side of the pic below:

I also noticed that I didn't have a Stopper Ring unless it happened to fall off at some point when I was removing the Bearing. Anyone know the purpose of the stopper ring and whether I need to get a new one in there?

Also is there a chance that the stopper ring is missing from a past job and that's what caused the damage to the spring wAsher?

For reference attached are pics of the parts sheets from the service manual

From your photos it appears to be the center lock nut "staked" to the shaft, notice the indent in the shaft. Not a good job of staking by PO. As for the stopper ring, Honda put it there for a reason, I have no idea what would happen without it, maybe let #18 not seat properly during operation.

Now that you mention it, when I look at the photo it does appear that there are some gouges on the lock nut "stake" where it appears someone has loosened and tightened it before. Unless it came that way from the factory.

Weird because the PO acted like the bike had been pretty much babied its whole life, and didn't acknowledge any clutch slipping even though I felt it on the test ride. He attributed it to that "smooth v4 acceleration".

Anyway, the indent on the shaft was the damage I was talking about. I'll probably try to pick up one of those stopper rings if I can find one and take it apart to drop it in there. I don't think the indent would cause any malfunction in the parts, but definitely want all the right parts in there to prevent anything else from happening.

Thankfully the clutch was only like a 30 minute job so I don't mind taking it apart to give it another look.

Also despite the lack of the locking ring performance on the clutch is night and day better than what I had previously.
