I have a friend who (lives away from me) is in the US Navy that wants to start riding. The thing is, I am not sure how the military training thing works. I was talking to him about taking the MSF course, but then I thought that he might have to take the MSF course and the military course as well. I know that more training is better, however, if he takes the military course, does that quality as a MSF course equivalient or better? If he takes the MSF course, does that quality as a military accepted course, or would he still need to take the military course as well? I am just looking for some clarification is all.

    I would appreciate your input.

The Department of Defense uses MSF for it's courses. There is no difference between the two with the exception of the Sportbike course that is non MSF being taught by the Air Force.

In the future, Jason, you may want to include more acronyms when trying to get help from the military. (I'm just saying they seem to like it)

At least in my AFSC they did when I was PCS to MAFB as an SS working at LFs for the USAF under SAC. <--That whole sentence will make sense to KC-10 and the others.

I used to be the motorcycle saftey guy for my squadron. Scary huh? Anyway, it probably depends on the Navy rules and his location. Different MAJCOM's in the USAF had slightly different rules. I think all were starting to be normalized, but it could ultimately come down to the base commander, and the individuals' supervisor. Yea, if his supervisor (rater) does not think he is capable he could deny him from the privilage. I would have your friend contact his bases' safety office.

The last instruction read' the navy wants members to complete the BRC first then purchase the bike.

I'm stationed in Maryland and have a Nevada drivers license, so I took the brc in Virginia because all I had to do was take my brc completion card to a Nevada DMV (I was planing on going to Las Vegas anyway) and they placed the motorcycle endorcement on my license.

If he is going to buy a "Sportbike"Watch the movie:

I can only speak in regards to the bases I've been stationed at & now KWRI since I am my SQ Motorcycle Safety NCO. Any MSF course is adequate as long as the person in question was issued a genuine MSF card with the upside down triangle symbol. In other words, if a military member takes a MSF course off base, the base should still accept it. I will check the DOD Instruction tomorrow & post back.

As TomServo said, a commander may revoke riding priviledges regardless if the member has taken the approved course. This usually only happens as a result of stupidity. I only know of one person on KWRI that was recommended to no longer ride due to lack of skill. This person simply did not need to be on a bike.

    KC-10 FE out...

At Ft. Bragg any MSF Basic Rider Course card is honored. I got my BRC off-post.

There used to be an Experienced Rider Course at Bragg, but its no longer taught from what I am told. Apparently, too many inexperienced dudes were coming back from deployment and low siding thier brand new Fat Boys or Busas while attemptnig to get the required ERC immediately after purchasing thier bikes. Right after I got my VFR in 06, I attended the course and recall watching in horror as a CPT from the 82d Airborne laid over his shiny new Olive Pearl Hertiage Softail Classic, scratching the paint, chrome and some very nice pipes. He was fine, but, oh that hurt to watch!

If you want to see alot of acronyms, check out a T.O. for an F-22, or the C-17, clearances providing. KC should have the lowdown on the required courses, as I just recently got my ridercoach certificate, and am still learning the A.F rules, haven't even looked into DOD rules/regulations yet.
