Do you know WHY it died? Or even if it's really dead at all? Could it be the relay? Did you do the jumper wire flow test?

Not to be insulting in any way... The only reason I ask is that I just saved the OEM unit on my '86 with a POINTS KIT from K&L Supply. The main reason that these things go south is the contacts on the top getting old, fried, and dirty. You should be able to tell if they need replacing by looking. There's not too much going on inside the pump to break or mess up. There's some kind of diaphragm that can get a hole in it, but if you cannot blow through the pump from the inlet side without a good deal of effort, it's probably good. I replaced the points and sprayed a little WD-40 on the shaft and she was good to go.

OEM fuel pump at a reasonable price is pretty much made of unobtainium. Third gen fuel pump would work but you're gonna need to mount it a little different to get optimum flow because the inlet and outlet are straight out (instead of a 90 degree bend like yours.) There are also plenty of generic options from China if you trust the integrity of your fuel system to junk lol. Mr. Gasket pump from AutoZone would work too, but a fuel pressure regulator would be a wise investment.

I believe most generic aftermarket pumps are limited to about 3-4 psi and should work fine. As RR suggests, don't blame your pump until you've tried the relay bypass cuz relays fail more often than pumps themselves.

He PM'ed me and shared that his Reg/Rec crapped out and the battery spiked, frying the relay and pump in the process. I'm not savvy to the particulars of Regulator issues, but, would the pump be hurt by that, or would the relay going out stop the flow of power and spare the pump?

It should spare the pump because the relay is a trigger for the pump when it gets a signal from the ignition.
