In a few weeks I will be making a ride from Wyo to Merced, CA (9/23, 9/24). My grandfather is turning 90 and the family is going to have a little reunion and party.

Day one will be to Ely, NV. (625 miles) Day two will be from Ely to Merced. (440 miles)

Anyways, my plan is to enter Cali via highway 6, then hit 120, which gos through Yosemite's East gate, then descend into Merced.

I was wondering if this is a good plan for the time of year.. On my way back I want to take a different route, but roughly in the same area of the state. I am looking for good road recommendations in that area of California, or roads to avoid.

Thanks in advance for your input.

    Thank you bob.

Can anyone from this region identify some good roads in this area of the Sierra Nevadas?

Your gonna pop oot of Yosemite very near Merced so I am guessing you are to you looking for route home, Hwy 49 to Hwy 108 is a sweeet ride and a ton of bikes and friendly riders and will put you back on the way home.

TC is correct and you can even take 49 further north and then 88 across the mountains and it will put a little further north than 108. Tends to always be CHP on 88.

Thanks. Yes, the plan is to cross into Nevada in about the same place I came into the state, ride across Nevada on Highway 50 (instead of highway 6) and stop in Ely again.

Another nice pass is Hwy 4, midway between 88 and 108. Just check the weather forecast when you're in Ely, the Sierras can get summer t-storms over the passes, especially on the east side.

I've ridden all of them and my favorite going east- home for you would be 108.
You can then take 395 north to 208/95 and hook up with 50.
50 is pretty boring but you can make up good time there.
If you are making a late evening crossing of the Sierra's it can get chilly.
