First the good news; it fired and ran today! Last registration date was '03. It looks like I'm going to have to go back into the carbs (just gave them a quick clean out) because it's really hard to start, it won't start without the choke on (hot or cold) and it needs to get really warmed up before it will run with the choke off. Seems like an issue in the idle circuit, so I have that to look forward to. But, I have another issue to resolve as well. The temp guage is not working on the bike. The fan never turned on. When I noticed the temp guage not working I turned the bike off because I wasn't sure if the fan would go on or not and I didn't want to overheat it. I bypassed the temp sensor on the left side of the radiator (simple jumper) and the fan works so I know it's good. Is there a way to test the sensor? Also, according to the wiring diagram there's a "thermo sensor" and a "thermo switch". What are the differencs and which one is on the left side of the radiator? I also have a "lose" green wire that is on the right side of the bike. When I tone it, it seems to be part of the temp / fan circuit (see pic below). There is also 2 bullet connectors that aren't hooked to anything below the instrument cluster (red / purple arrows). One of those also tones out with the same circuit. Am I missing a part somewhere?
The sensor for the gauge is on the thermostat housing, a green/blue wire should be connected to it. The sensor for activating the fan is on the lower left corner of the radiator with black (+) and black/blue (-) wires attached. To test the fan, place a jumper wire between the black and blue/black wires, turn on the ignition switch, the fan should run. If it does not, check for voltage on the black wire. All green wires are ground wires, look around and see if you can find one unplugged. The two wires indicated by the purple and green arrows in the photo are auxiliary connections, one positive, one negative, I believe that the positive is live at all times, you can check that out.
Found the connection on the thermostat housing, Thank you! I tested the fan earlier and it works. Any idea at what temp the fan is supposed to turn on?
