    Hi all,

Im in need of some help. Im trying to change the oil in my bike and having some issues with removing the inner cowl (black bit covering the headers).
The two hex bolts of the left fairing just keep spinning and wont come out.
i have just been told that the reason behind this is the rubber grommits that the bolts screw into are turning with the bolt.

Is there any tip or trick to remove these bolts as its driving me CRAZZZYYYY!

    Thanks in advance.

    Matt

you have to reach in behind the cowl and hold the rubber coated nut, either by hand or a small pair of vise grips.
there is also 2 ( one on each side ) a plastic rivit os what ever you want to call it avove where it meets the side fairing that you will need to remove.

Why not leave it on? I just did my first oil change on a vfr last weekend. I took the side fairings off but left the black inner "brace" on. It just hung there and I was easily able to get at the filter with it on.

    EDIT

Hmmmmm, now you have me wondering if I did it the hard way lol. Do you remove the side fairings to do an oil change?

How do you take the side fairings off without takng off the black inner cowl? It's attached via tabs. I looked at trying to do a change without taking her clothes off but seems to messy. I have tried to hold it with pliers but I can't. It just spins.

    Any other idea?

it is a pain in the arse to get them ( the screws ) off but it can be done. if you dont have a manual you can click on link and down load it.

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/specifications/3161-downloadable-parts-catalogs-service-manuals.html

second option and lay down a blanket under the bike - is to remove both fairings will black pc still attached and roll it out from under the bike on the blanket so it dont get all marred up.
that is a pain as well but it works then you can fix the messed up rubber coated nut.. I just use the plastic push in auto trim rivits on one side now.

Sorry if this is vague but I've only done it once lol.

I removed all the bolts for the side fairings, and the 2 push pins in the belly(bottom) that attaches the Left and right fairings.
I unscrewed the 2 bolts at the bottom of the black brace, then the 2 at the top.

where the steel lines curve up to the cooler there's 1 push pin on either side, I took those out. And then I took one push pin out of each side right below the clip ons (handle bars) When standing by bike there's a push pin on either side of the forks slightly forward of where the side and nose cowls meet. Those are the ones.

Hmm don't really want to do that. I will try with the pliers again as I've tries to stick te grommits down with glue (dropped glue in the rough place where they should be)

ive looked through the manual but doesn't seem to help much.

Please let me know if anyone comes up with any other ideas.

try throwing your bike down on either side...once the fairings are good and broken, it should be a piece of cake to change the oil.....

seriously though, your gonna have to grab the nut real tight and hang on while you try and unscrew it....

Just went through the same problem.

Tried the vise grip method, ended up with drilling the heads off and then ordered new bolts and nuts and use "never seize".

I rode for a few weeks untill the new bolts and nuts were shipped.

Something must happen with the road dirt and the proximity of the heat in that area.

Had the same problem with mine. Luckily only one of mine was all buggered and stuck. Ended up taking the inner cowl off with the one side plastic that it was still attached to. Just like Cheyanne I was not able to save the nut and bolt, had to cut it out as it was seized up completely. Didn't think about switching to the little plastic trim clips like 02 VFR Rider did, but I think when I change the oil next I may do so.
