    Hi,

I have a 2009 VFR800 with only 16 000km on the clock. Up until today, no problems at all. The bike has been stationary in my garage for the past 4 months. The past 3 days I have been riding to work and back (100km roundtrip). Everything went smoothly to the office this morning, but this afternoon, when I started up to go home, problem begins. Just does not want to go into neutral and then only into (what seems to, only into some lower gear).

Eventually got it into neutral and then waited for temperature to reach 100 degrees. It went into 1st and when I got onto the highway the gears change was smooth as always.

Got home, while idling put it into neutral, then first and the problem is back, does not want to go into all gears. I did the 12000km service iol/filter change (this was 18 months ago) and planning to do oil/filet change this weekend.

Anybody experienced this before, what is causing it, what seems to be the problem?

Pleeeease!! Would really appreciate any advice or comments on this problem.

    thank you

I had a similar problem with my '01 when I rode it home from the guy's place that I bought it from. It appeared to be too much oil in the crank case, the oil window was well above the max line! (window was all oil top to bottom). As soon as I changed the oil and filled it up properly, she shifted like a champ. Not sure if it's the same for you, what does you oil level and oil look like? BTW, I put in Rotella T6 full synthetic, not sure what the previous owner had in it, other than too much!

that's pretty low mileage to be having trouble. I'd probably try what OOTV said first, then start looking for trouble.

I did the previous oil change myself, oil level is spot on. Must be something else causing?

Another thought, you said your bike sat for 4 months, how does the clutch feel? When was the last time the line was flushed and bled?

I ask this because when the bike is moving along the road you can shift gears without using the clutch, it just requires timing and finesse. However, when trying to go into neutral or when coming to a stop, the clutch is usually needed, maybe this is a clutch issue as you said it shifts fine when your moving.

STANDARD SUGGESTION # 34 in FAQ:

"Far more likely a clutch release problem than a gearbox issue.

If clutch won't fully release, you'll have trouble selecting gears, naturally.:grief:

Check for any leaks around the slave, and clean out old fluid from mc, paying special attention to the small fluid return hole, then bleed out old fluid from line.

Too high an idle speed makes shifting harder; and it's never good to hit neutral at higher engine revs as damage could possibly result to gears or clutch."

The shifting problem (not be able to select a gear or neutral) is when I am stationary/stopping. Once I get moving, the shifting is smooth/normal.

It's normal when stopped or engine not running to have gear selection problems cuz the 2 gear shafts may be unfavorably aligned dog-to-dog and won't slip in. Using force on the shift pedal in this situation can damage shift forks.

If the rear wheel is turning, it's always easier to select a gear.

Sounds like a loose seal in the master piston--pressure is not building up in the slave to disengage the clutch plates and allow shifting while stationary. As OOT and squirrel said using the clutch is not necessary while moving-- all the gears are always meshed, it's just the dogs that slide and lock a pair...
