What should I do?

  1. Disc lock and cable to something like a fence should be fine- you have full coverage dude...

  2. Drive your cage dude- there will be plenty of time to ride later

Hey all, I found out I am being sent to Honda factory training next week (autos) in Portland and will be in a hotel in Gresham (not the nicest part of Portland- the hotel is on 181st for you locals) The weather looks decent enough I am thinking about riding and am wondering what you guys suggest I do to try and secure my bike overnight. The hotel only has outside parking and I'm not sure how accessible the light poles will be if I want to chain to one. I don't have the cash for an alarm- but it wouldn't matter anyway if I'm in a hotel room 3 stories away. I'm gonna buy either a disc lock or u-lock this weekend. Any suggestions? HELP! If I have to drive my cage I will, and I probably should, I just hate to not ride when i could...

Oh, also for those who have disc locks, which did you get, what is your opinion and how does it fit? What would you get for a 6th Gen?

I've got a disc lock, the OnGuard model: OnGuard Boxer Disc Lock - Motorcycle Superstore

Too bad you're not local to me, I'd trade it to you for a 12 pack as I've only used it a couple times. It's nice, well made. Just remember to always use the reminder cable that slips over your handle bars.

OK, if you will take the bike, I would suggest:

    A. Disc locks front and rear. New ones with a std lock, not the tubular barrel.

    B. Cable lock around an immovable object.

    C. Within sight of front door.

    D. and covered with a lock.

    E. And remind front desk its their bike, and you will shoot them if it disappears.

    F. Research company travel policy on insurance coverage.

    That MIGHT work.

I thought about a disc lock in the rear, but it's a solid disc so I don't see how it could attach... leaning toward the truck at this point.

I suppose the other option would be to try and crash at my brother's place and skip the hotel so i can put it in his garage, though that means a longer commute on the freeway...I should probably drive the cage shouldn't I....

A disk lock isn't going to help if several people pull up in a van or truck and pick it up load it. If you aren't positive that there will be somewhere to chain the bike I wouldn't risk it. Call the hotel manager and ask him about possible places to chain the bike.

Another option is to cover the Honda tank decal with a Hyosung sticker....Nobody would steal it then

    Regards,
    Rollin

No amount of disc locks, cables and covers are going to save you. Anywhere on the street and it's gone.

If you have doubts cage it. I mean drive your truck, not put the bike in a cage. Another option could be a Glock sticker or 2, chain it to a large dog, or sleep next to it 'cause you wouldn't want to sleep outside in a parking lot in a strange place by yourself would you? C'mon, think about HER feelings too.

I take my VFR just about every place I travel to.
    1. I have full coverage insurance on it ($500 deductible)
    2. She is gray (pewter) with OEM hard bags, not overly attractive to a bike thief, this was a factor in my purchase of the bags and the color.
    3. I use a disk lock (at night at a hotel only) keeps the honest guys away, only
    4. Always keep a .40 or larger bore hot lead dispenser with me. (never know)
    5. If she gets jacked, I will take the insurance payout and place a down payment on a new one and ride that one home or get a taxi to the airport.

I have thought about the lo-jack for bikes but like i said a gray VFR with hard bags is not a high theft item, a CBR1000 all pimped out will get lifted quickly.

Buy a disk lock and a cover and enjoy the ride.

....I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the truck- I'd hate to have my new VFR ripped by some mouthbreather- or worse, have some dickhead attempt to jack it and eff it up before I even got a summer in riding it.

Get a first floor room and roll it inside at night. I've done that before and still have the same bike!

Unfortunately all the rooms' doors are inside the hotel and I think they would be pissed if I rode through the lobby and did a fat burnout next to the waffle cooker for the free continental breakfast! Still undecided.....its cold but so freaking sunny!

I'd take the truck. We've had some "stagnet" air warnings the past week (basically no circulation of the air) and thus the morning fog has been real bad and has been freezing to the roads.

Yeah, I've decided to drive the truck- between weather and possibility of theft, plus driving around in the Portland Metro area on the freeways with all the crazies....I'm better off driving- company is buying the gas anyway...
