I almost rejoined the ranks of the crashed viffer club this morning! I've been working 12+ hr days all weekend as part of our big conversion at work. I was riding in at about 5 this morning on a 2 lane, waiting for a chance to pass a minivan. I had dropped a gear to pass, and just as I started to gas it and pull out to go around, I saw a doe standing at the edge of the road in the other lane. I was maybe 30ft behind the van when the deer just ran into the side of the van. It bounced off and spun around in the air. I instinctively countersteered over to the outside of the road while braking hard as the deer sailed by me on my left and landed in the left half of my lane. I'm pretty sure if I was in my car I would have taken the deer right in the windshield.
No Tim that's a good point, probably should've stopped on the way home for a MegaMillions tix. I'm off today to recoup from the weekend of hell, probably should do that... I was having flashbacks about flying deer all day at work, too. I think that's the closest I've (knowingly) come to death so far, and it came on my son's 10th birthday. Who was it that was able to get around one and bumped it with his knee a few weeks ago ? OK follow up question - do those deer whistle things actually work? My last car came with them from the PO and I never hit a deer. Anyone seen any science about those things?
That would be me. And I am still having problems with the flashbacks and thinking about how much worse it could have been. Good thing our guardian angels can keep up...
Everything I've read or heard is that they are useless for repeling deer. Don't have any scientific back up for this, though.
friend of mine at work who rides, got one last week. still waiting to see if his bike is a wright off.
I grew up in MN and lived in rural WI for about 6 years. The woods practically run right up to the edge of the road in a lot of cases and the population is so dense you can get up to 6 permits to harvest deer. At one point, I'd hit 3 deer in 6 months between my car and truck. On the small town radio, you'd hear of at least one person a year not making it thru a bike/deer accident. Keep your eyes peeled especially during dawn and dusk hours when they are most active.
