I bought this bike a week ago.
I test rode it and it was symptomatic of dirty / gummed up carbs.
I've been taking it apart to clean the carbs.

Strangely enough, I've just discovered that this bike has NO fuel pump or fuel filter. It's also missing the fuel tube that should run from the pump to carbs. They seem to have used the curved tube from the fuel tank petcock outlet straight to the carbs. Can you belive that the bike actually ran without these items? I rode it just a week ago. Now I'm wondering if I needed all of these carb parts now. Needless to say, I'm buying one from ebay and cleaning the carbs anyway. It's literally missing all of these parts except the curved fuel tube.

WOW. Should I call the guy I bought it from and do some negotiating? Or accept it as is and move forward?

well you got the bike.. did you pay top dollar for it? not really sure there is much you csan do about it.. most statees are "as is" places. only way is if he misrepresented the bike, like saying it was in mint condition,

The '86 vf500f Interceptors came w/o fuel pump or filters. It works...I installed new filters on mine and it still runs like a scalded cat.

    Go figure...

I know from experience that scalded cats run pretty fast.

Seriously pgafuture, I don't know about a Gen 3 bike, but there are mods for actually removing the fuel pump from earlier models of the Gen 1's and rely only on gravity feed. There's another one to cut out the petcock diaphragm to allow unrestricted fuel flow to the carbs. This may have been an attempt to mod yours. Any luck finding a pump?

I'm buying one new....with all of the tubing. Hoping that'll be all in need to get on the road. Hopefully no one has messed around with the carbs but with this bike, who knows. It's been a lot more than I originally thought, but I'd think most projects are. I've been re-routing all the wires and it's become a domino effect. I think I'm almost out of dominos, however.

Yeah, believe me...I understand. I picked up a '97 three days ago at a great price. Found an air leak in the rear tire valve stem yesterday, pulled the rear wheel off today (Gawd I love the single sided swing arm!) to get it fixed and noticed a deep cut in the front tire sidewall. But you're right...the line of dominos is getting shorter.
