my third gen is finally charging. I road it about 120 miles today and all is good except one thing. I was on the way to the house and she died just doing 45. I putted to the side of the road, shifted to neutral, it fired right up. I put it in first and pulled away. As soon as I got going fast enough, I shifted to second. It died there shortly after. I again put it in neutral and started it. Made it 2 miles and it died again. After starting it there, it would die instantaneously when shifting to first gear. Sometimes it would go a little ways if i reved it up to 2000 and shifted, but then it would die a few feet down the road. I have a feeling it has something to do with side stand sensor, but why wouldn't it turn my light on when it kills it like the stand is down? Any help would be much appreciated. I just dumped 400 into the charging system and it finally work, I put a new chain on today and I really need this thing to ride back and forth to school. Thanks VFR dudes.

I just replaced the filter, but not with a factory one. I had to replace the fuel line because it broke, also didn't use factory spec replacement. Last night I took the kickstand off and cleaned all the parts from oil from chain lube. after reassembly, and some dielectric grease on a few plugs, the bike is some what shorting out when i raise and lower the kickstand. It turns on the high beam light and you can hear the relays up by the headlight clicking. I don't know what its doing, but now it won't start at all. ??????

Short between the green and green/white wires at the plug to see if that fixes it.

The green wire goes from the switch to the ICM. If that wire is bad, it would cut power to the starter. Make sure the battery and starter relay connections are good.

I am prettysure they are good. It was starting for me earlier this morning, but after continually messing with the sensor on the sidestand, it won't even try to turn over now. I am so frustrated. New stator, vfrness, rectifier, chain and still not riding. GRRRR!!!! I think I just need to step away from it for awhile.

Glad you found the problem. Where was the loose/disconnected ground wire located? (just curious)

it was on the right hand side if you are sitting on it, under the tailsection. the problem was that I thought I could make my own VFRness, so I went in and chopped the ground that went from the original wiring harness to the rectifier. I then put an eyelet on that green wire with 3 grey dots on it and had it bolted to the frame thinking that it need to be grounded since it wasn't being grounded through the rectifier anymore. Well, when I finally broke down and bought a VFRness, I didn't know what to do, so I unscrewed it from the from. Apparently it was still touching the frame after I put the tailsection back on, but barely. So my final hypothesis is that it came loose from the frame and then touched again and came loose and touched again. The sidestand switch eventually shorted out. My fix: bolt the eyelet back to the frame, and wire the green and green/white wire from the sidestand together.

A fine example of why it can be very hard to pinpoint an electrical snag over the internet. The whole story rarely comes out, until it is too late. It turns out, that nobody would have come up with the right answer in this case, because there is no way of knowing that this extra wire even existed.

I'm not bashing you, but trying to emphasize the importance of not leaving vital info out of the original post. We're not there with the bike, so you are our eyes and ears and the more info that is given, the easier it will be to figure out. Hopefully, others will learn from this, thus making this a better forum.

    Glad you got it running.

Right on. I'll often times try to ask people for more history. Hoping some of those clues will come out. Like "has it ever ran right for you or is this a new purchase" etc. Obviously I didn't do it this time....

I really do appreciate the scolding. It's old tymers like the fellas on here that keep us young wippersnappers walking straight. I will try clarify things a little better next time.
