I couldn't live with the stock muffler anymore, so thought I might see if I could fix it up a bit (or ruin it trying) .With performance gains, weight loss, and better looks as my goal. I started by cutting a large opening in the side of it to see what was going on. The large upper pipe actually ends a few inches short of the upper exhaust exit (with the flap on it). This forces the exhaust flow to make a U-turn inside the can and make its way into the small lower pipe. Even when the flap opens, the exhaust pulses still have to bounce around inside the can! While I had the big hole open, I thought I would gut some weight out of it. Dont waste time trying this, as 99% of the weight is the heavy walls of the can. By the end of it all I got rid of 1.5 lbs of junk (not worth the work for me). Next, I removed the entire flap abortion and cable . Then used a 2inch hole saw bit to drill out the remaining upper exit pipe. Now I could get to the end of the large 1 7/8 inch pipe that ends about 3 inches from the back of the muffler. Went to the auto parts shop and bought a 4 inch extension, which now connected gives a strait flow all the way through the muffler. I then packed the muffler with fiberglass, and closed it back up.
Now the moment of truth! This morning I fired it up and took it out. It sounds FANTASTIC ! Not super loud, but really crisp and mean sounding. The bike also feels quicker! And for some reason the fueling feels a bit smoother!!
As for the looks of the ugly piece of shite, Im chucking the nasty chrome cover, and replacing it with a lovely carbon fiber one from Aerolite Composites. Will post pics when I get that later in the week . Should look tits !!

Awesome  This is the first attempt at a major stock exhaust fiddling on the 7th gen I've seen. Hell it might not even look so fugly without that big ass shiny piece, I just figured it was part of the muffler body itself and would have to be painted or something. Good Job dublflush, don't forget to post lots more pics, we like pics, especially when they have new spiffy cf bits in them!!

Thanks for the info. PICS please. I would like to get more sound also, but I really like the look of the stock muffler and don't want to go aftermarket.

    Thanks
