I just got back from a 4 day 1,800 mile ride from Ohio to Deals Gap and back. I was consistently getting 45 MPG with fully loaded bags and the throttle lock set at 85+ mph on the super slab. My fuel gauge would start blinking around 160-165 miles. I could have gotten more than 200 miles per tank, but we were stopping for gas about every 170 miles. MPG dropped, of course, once riding the excellent twisty back roads in that area but that was because I was doing a lot of high RPM riding in 2nd and 3rd gear. For comparison, my buddy's 2011 Ninja 1000 was getting 40 MPG on the highway stretches. I think the VFR12 does a better job of cutting through the wind at high speeds than the Kawasaki.
