I am about to get a 6th gen. What do I need to consider maintenance wise that I didn't need to think about with the fifth? I am told there is no tool kit. What do I need to have on the shelf?
A set of metric sockets and metric socket allen wrenches goes a LONG way on the 6th gen, much as I'd assume it did for the 5th gen. Socket set "goodies" like extensions and universal joints are great to have as well. The only bike-specific tools that come to mind are the spanner wrenches for the shock preload adjuster and the eccentric to adjust the chain tension. I bought a chain staker tool to install the new chain on my 6th gen. I was able to work on the front and rear brakes, thermostat (including removal of throttle body, air box, fuel tank), coolant changes, oil changes, chain and sprockets (with the exception of a generic staker tool) and much of the wiring with nothing more than a "standard issue" toolbox inventory - sockets, allens, box wrenches, screwdrivers, and torque wrenches. Congrats on the upcoming "new" bike! :thumb:
Why you ditching the 5th gen, and damn I wish I had some dollars tucked away to take her off your hands!!
Just a friendly reminder that just like the 5th Gen, tank bags should be secured to 6th Gen VFR's using the actual tank ROFL!!! Sorry had to do it Ed!! Rollin
Elwray got it pretty good. The spanner is a MUST. I will always recommend having a Hand Impact Driver in your tool box. They're great for busting loose stubborn fastners.
The 6th Gen should come with a tool kit, grab rails and the little covers if you want to take the rails off. If you're buying ti from a private party then they might be missing. Maintenance is very simple so the spanner/chain adjust tool, extension handle, 5mm allen head for your plastic removal should be enough to keep with the bike. What year are you purchasing? Pre-2006 models will have the wiring harness recall so make sure that has already been taken care of.
Welcome to the party! I really waffled over a 5th Gen vs my '07. I never test rode a gen 5 so I could hear those gears in action. Often wonder what I missed.
Some guys have no mercy and no shame. Just wait til those two little boys finish working your nerves. You'll be leaving a few things around too LOL
