The ideal setup is to have a dedicated structure on your property. Same property where you live.

I also like the idea of keeping them inside your home. Of course, this won't work in many cases for various reasons.

Climate control on both the above is a huge positive!

Most of mine right now are in 2 different storage units...although I also have 7 here at my place.

I'm trying to get something built on my property but need to do some prep work before that can happen.

I have a 2 car garage here but it currently houses a vintage sports car, one of my RC26's, and a bunch of tools and other stuff.

There are a few disadvantages of keeping motorcycles in a storage unit. One is lack of electric, but fortunately one of mine has electric plus two overhead shop lights. It's 15'x30', so fairly large. Having electric is nice because I can use battery tenders on my bikes.

Another disadvantage of using a storage unit is you are subject to rate increases. Usually they come only once a year, but if your rate is a discounted one at the start, you will usually get an increase just a few months in.

    My 15' x 30' w/electric's monthly rate is $311.19 - and that includes a $2K protection plan for $12/mo., which is mandatory.

I started my rental on November 14, so figure next month I'd get hit with an increase. I really like this unit. It's the best one I've had since I started using them about a year or so ago, when my collection reached critical mass! So, I remembered a conversation I had with a man I met who has a unit around the corner from me. He mentioned you can pay ahead of time - he said he did his for 12 months - and that "locks" you in to your current rate.

So today I went there to do just that for my unit. What I found out - and this is huge - as long as you keep renewing your rental at least 2 months in advance of the last arranged rental period....you'll be able to keep that same rate. If you pay ahead for 12 months....after 10 months go in and renew it for another period of time - minimum 2 - 3 months, I'd guess.

So I did mine for 6 months today and if I still want it for longer I will go in in 4 months and pre-pay ahead again.

I know I know.......that adds up quickly! But for me it's a means to an end and the most important thing is preserving my quiver of v4's.

This thread can be for any discussion about storage you want. Feel free to share pics and back stories. I think it a legit subject for anyone who has a collection over two or three bikes.

    My 15' x 30'.......before filling it.......:)

I use my garage. There's no space indoors.

public storage will harass you endlessly if you leave anything, no atter how small, in the unit when you move out. if you leave just one old box theyll charge full rent until you remove it, a scam for sure. expect threatining emails daily, my experience with p.s.

I leave mine empty, blown out with a leaf blower, and any spots left from leaks cleaned up. I mean.....that's how they are when I move in......why not leave it the same way for the next customer?

Testing posting pics. Any idea why this is the only forum on Al Gore's Internet that won't show pics?

    Yours posted just fine.

Just my experience but this forum doesn't like image files that are posted just using the file address. You need to first save the image to your drive...and then drag into the post.

Last time my garage was all cleared out was when I had to replace the tar & gravel flat roof back in '08. I hired a friend to do the demo and carpentry and then I did the peel and stick on top of the new plywood roof.

I went ahead and repainted the inside at the same time.

I need to do this again - just the evacuation part - and then not clutter it up so much!

Thanks. It's a '72 with an updated engine. The 2.0 liter with the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection, which wasn't used on them until '73. For a 4 cylinder it's quick and a blast to drive!

My winter storage is my unheated garage with a tile floor. Plenty room for both my bikes and all my woodworking machinery. BUT! If I want to construct some sawdust, I need to move both bikes out.. Matter of fact, I can only have one or two machines pulled away from the walls to use at a time. I do have to be careful when working on the bikes though. I have to blow the dust out of the garage, let it settle, blow it out again, let it settle then blow it out a third time and let it settle before I begin working on anything internal. So far is works.

If I were about 20 years younger and perceived what I fight with now, I would have sold this place and either bought an existing rancher house with no stairs and a good sized double garage for mine and my wife's cars for a change. Then with a decent sized piece of property, I would build a huge shop divided and dust proofed so I have a place to store the bikes and have a clean environment to work on the bikes, and the other side would be to make sawdust. I would probably never clean that part of the shop again.

But I am not 20 years younger and I think it is too late for all of that, except maybe the new house without the stairs.

Not far from my plan. I built this place in 07/08 "for the next guy: but ended up staying. the next one will be ~40x50 with a full under garage/shop/man space aimed north to keep it cool. Two car garage at house level for daily drivers and gardening stuff.

didnt have room on the truck, moved out of town, etc., lotsa simple reasons. throwing out a worthless box is ez and takes no time.

public storage tries to rip renters off when theyre moving out. i think they rented my unit at the same tie they were billing me.
