Over the last summer my wife went from "You'll get another bike over my dead body", to I want one of my own to ride. So I picked up an 86 VF 500 F off of e-Bay for her to ride once she takes the 3 day riding course next spring. Anyway, I had a couple questions for some folks who are familiar with these bikes: How much valve clatter would you expect to hear from these engines? I wouldn't expect much with the tight clearances it should have, but some engines are just noisier than others. I read several places on the site that the first Gen engines had problems with the heads oiling correctly. Does thatinclude the 500's? and if so, how would you tell if it has already been fixed? I'm sure I'll come up with more questions about the VF500, especially the '84 basket case in the garage. But atleast now I've got a template to figure out were some of the pieces in boxes go. Thanks in advance for your help. Merry Christmas! Dean
Good for you DG! If it wasn't for Ebay and generous folks at swap meets, I'd only have 1 running bike. By 86 Honda had gotten the 500 oiling problems right to the best of my knowledge. Definately use synthetic!
Good going, thats a smart bike. Honda needs to bring her back.. Yep what Legs says if she's been takin care of no doubt she's okay, as far as noise goes I'd have to hear it to be able to give you an answer, as some made a wee bit of valve train noise not a lot thou.
