Hi, i have a 2000 fi-x 800 and it has been quite reliable until recently.

I recently exchanged the chain and sprocket set, taking the oppourtunity to drop the gearing a little using a standard 43T rear but dropping 1 tooth on the front.

On reassembling and taking for a test ride i discovered that it has now developed an annoying tendancy to misfire when i hit bumpbs in the road. It runs fine when stood still but as soon as im moving and hit a pothole it misfires, the rev counter appears to drop 500-100 revs before bouncing straight back up.

I have checked the wiring around the fuel system and all connections seem to be fine from what i can see

Anyone had similar problems or suggestions on what the cause might be. I really dont have the time/tools to completely test the complete wiring loom so some guidance would be fantastic!

check and clean your CDI plug, ignition coil connections, and replace the plugs with new properly gapped ones. this will resolve 98% of mechanical problems.

Another cause of this problem is a bad ground connection on the battery.

Make sure you have a good ground from the battery to the ENGINE.
And a good ground from the battery to the FRAME.

good call Donald. I forgot that one, but its a commonly overlooked (and easy) fix. clean and tighten battery cables. do both, and use some contact cleaner to avoid corrosion in the process.

This time of the year you have to actually remove the battery cable from the battery because there can be a black grease like coating that keeps the battery from making a good connection. Even though it looks ok from the outside.
Sprinkle baking soda over the area an mist with water. It will bubble up and neutralize all the battery acid. Then clean the terminal mating surfaces with sandpaper to clean shinney metal.

Also you were working near the chain and the regulator wires going to the alternator are right there in that area. Check for corrosion on them.
