photo.jpg photo.jpg Got into a minor fender bender today. Woman cut across 4 lanes of traffic and I almost made it but lady luck tagged my front wheel and forced the handlebars out of my hands to the right hand side. Felt like a sledge hammer hitting the front end gently.

I stayed on the bike did not fall, get thrown tossed etc... Front wheel appears to be binding, very minor cosmetic damage I jammed the ABS hard and the front wheel dipped as she came to a stop and then made contact with her rear bumper, question is I know the Scotts did the job of taking the impact out of the handle bars but could they be damaged? No visible oil leaks yet is there a way to test them?

Ok for those of you that get involved in the same situation here's what to do when checking for potential damage. Check steering stops for abrasions ad well as the triple clamp. If both are ok then the damper should be fine.

Sounds like she was at fault so don't screw around.

Get the bike into a good garage with the right gear for a decision and claim on her insurance if they're knackered.

I know this is an old thread but thought I would post for future use.

The Scotts stabilizer has a sheer pin that will break to prevent major damage to the body of the unit. It can be found where the link arm is connected to the main body of the unit with a nut. You will need a link arm puller, available from Scotts to prevent damage to the unit during removal. Or you can send the unit in for inspection and repair.

This is a pretty stout unit that will take extremely hard hits without any damage to the unit. I have one on a fourwheeler that I race cross country with. I broke the sheer pin after striking a tree at speed which crushed the front wheel and bent the handle bars. I was able to maintain control and return to the pits for a wheel change. I truly believe my wrist would have been broken and I would have crashed if I did not have the stabilizer.

I have since struck other trees, rocks, animals and other fourwheelers hard enough to pull the handle bars out of my hand without any damage to the unit.

Stabilizers are life savers. I have one on order for the VFR now.

Scotts damper helps a lot in high winds too-turn it up so the wind doesn't push the steering over.
