I brought the parts home to freshen up the starter clutch in my 83 last night and noticed two small oil drips under my bike. Seems to be coming from the oil pan on both the right and left sides. I've got a full 4 into 1 Hindle exhaust on it and those bolts are looking pretty sketchy on whether they're going to play nice and loosen up without snapping.

Should I just carry an extra quart with me everytime I go for a spin?

By the way, the starter kicks the engine over without issue now. Too cold for the oil the other day perhaps??

Mine was doing that the beginning of last year. After 25+ years the oil pan edge started getting corrosion above where the stock exhaust collector is. Of coarse you can't get to a couple of bolts because of it, so drop the exhaust. The pan has an o-ring type seal. Clean off corrosion and seal groove. Coated, very lightly, groove, stuck seal back in and very lightly coated the seal with anaerobic sealer. All is well for the next 25yrs.

I'd fix it if I was you. Makes a mess of the underside plus will eventually get on rear tire. Which is a:nono:

To my absolute amazement the exhaust came off without too much of an issue. I pulled the pan and inspected the oil pick up screen...what an awful mess!! Looks to be quite a bit of blue gasket maker type bits and a few metal flakes but most disturbing is the fur I found....why the hell would there be fur/hair in the oil pan?

    LOL !! :noidea:
Have you checked your airbox lately? There was a thread here (or was it VFRD?) solely of pics of rodent nests in people's VFR airboxes.... You might have sucked one of those critters through while turning the bike over during/after the winter.

Hey Heatmizr. That was my thought at first but I realized I had just done the carbs the week before and no critters in the box! I have no clue.

When my VF500 had the oil pan leak I had a hell of a time with it.
Exhaust wouldn't budge. When I finally got it off I couldn't get the oil pan to seal...even with a new oil pan gasket.

I eventually had to add a very thin coating of gasket sealer to help it seal.

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing Slowbird. I really don't want to go through the hassle of dealing with the leaks again.

Just be careful not to splooge (yeah, that's a technical term) too much gasket sealer on there.

Done. I was careful with the splooging so as not to get any on the internal side of the pan lip. I put some cardboard underneath the bike and don't see any drips this morning. Now to re&re the chain and sprockets!
