I've allways had no fear of repainting any bike.

    Untill now.
I LOVE my Skunk. The '04 Yamaha FZ1 Raven has been my favorite FZ paint scheme and part of the reason I bought one. I have loved this bike for years and the love is showing. Scratches, chips, scrapes, overspray from being in the shop when working on other projects, general damage from riding gear and cargo. I use this bike like it's an SUV.
So here I am. Looking at my "daily rider" and telling myself "It looks like hell"
Do I just restore it as stock? Do I do something custom?
I have painted some FLASHY bikes, but thats for other people. I like simple and classy. And some sometimes flat finishes. I have a couple months before I park it for the winter so I have time to ponder what I want to do.
    Any input?

I would keep it practical as that is the way you use it. It's a workhorse and to be honest, it looks ok to me.

Ive spent the last hour looking at paint schemes for other bikes and no luck...hmmm not to flashy.... just a question. In the last picture your bike has a goldish color... is it just a trick of the lighting or is it still the black/grey color? That gold color doesnt look bad IMO.

    I like the current scheme.

What about throwing something different behind it for an exhaust to freshen the look up for you?

It's black and Yamaha Liquid Silver. Just a lighting thing there around all the FT Benning red dirt. I may see about matching the Yam factory color and patching up the dings and shooting a high quality clear. I saw on '03 Raven (black and yellow "Bee") that did the same thing and added 2 tone to the front fender. It looked pretty sharp.

I am almost always ready to add red to a black bike. They are meant to be together. But, for the first time I can ever recall, I don't think it will add anything. That color scheme is great the way it is. Freshen it up, put enough clear on it to make it look like you can swim it and be done. Yamaha knew what they were doing with that color scheme.

If your going to repaint, go for bright, visible, I would suggest yellow.

    After that, its your bike.

Most of the damage is to the silver. This winter when I tear it down I'll tale the tail in and see if my paint shop has a good match. Most of the black may be salvageable with wet sand and buff then some fresh, high end clearcoat. I like the black over silver alot.... then the tail is bass akwards.... maybe flip that and add a bit of silver on the front fender....
    Red's and yellow's just ain't my style.

keep the current scheme, freshen up the paint on the fork lowers and consider a metallic jet hot on the exhaust and something on the rims to add a little more contrast to the rest of the scheme. nothing flashy but just a little to pull the eyes around to other parts of the bike.

Thats the 03 Raven. the "Bee"
    Mine is the 04 "skunk"
Most FZ1s had the silver frames and motors. The "ravens" those 2 years were blacked out.

I'm a fan of grey/black/silver finishes so I would say just clean it up stock. You could try go with a lighter silver though for something different (so it would look like the picture against the helicopter all the time)

Bryan88: I was actually thinkig about the dull, satin paint like HD has been using. The contrast of the 2 tone looks good on this bike and IF I respray in the dull "demim" paint and not just patch it up would save alot of buffing and waxing. My little chopper in the flat, OD CARC paint is just so low maintancene it makes me think of the flat finish.

Consider a plasti-dip finish for dull parts. Good way to experiment and see if you will really like it.

Makes me miss my 03 FZ1 :) Mine was silver and I liked it but the skunk scheme looks awesome and I always wanted a "bee". I would just do it fresh and do the "Bee" scheme
