Picked up an 86 vf500, come to find out the lower air box plenum is broken in places

Might be repairable with a lot of custom jb weld and sanding, but I figured I should try eBay to see what's out there.

I found a plenum from an 84.. part numbers are different.. how much of a difference is there between 84 and 86 vf500? Will the part interchange?

    Thanks

    Edit:

The air cleaner base on this carb set does not have the holes for the carb vent cossover tubes.. yet the carbs have the tubes that look as if they should fit into a base that has holes in it.. like the 84 base. There's a sticker on the air cleaner lid that lists the air cleaner base from an 85, so there must be some difference.. hoping it's the holes for the vents. Just like the 82/83 vf750c magna has the same.?

Maybe I have 84 carbs and an 86 base?

Permatex Plastic Epoxy is very good stuff, better than JB.

looks like someone levered on the plenum to get the carbs out at some point.

Ebay is a good bet for a new one

I've found an air cleaner base for an 84, are they interchangeable?

It looks like the main difference is the holes for the carb bowl vent tube to go into the base.

Carb bodies are Most Likely the same. Netting and needle sizes may be different for year to year I'm sure.

Not familiar with this model yet. If it was a Magna, I would already know

I don't think you can interchange parts between the 84 and 86 carbs sadly. The '84 are 32mm and the '86 are 30mm. I've just been out to have a look as I have '84 carbs on the bike and a set of '86 in pieces... It's difficult to get anything into the plenum to measure the exact difference but the picture below shows the size difference in the washer for each set, the '84 is a good bit bigger so I don't think you'd be able to mix and match.

Correct. I've got 2 sets of carbs on my bench right now. 84-85 will not play with 86.

Let me see exactly what carbs are in there because the lid looks like it was bought in eBay and says for 1985

Are these the correct carbs for 1986 vf500f?

That's the engine serial number, and I have the line bored heads.

Feel like I'm kinda screwed right now

You can run the 32mm carbs on the 86 Engine. That's what my Race VF500 had. And the 84-85 Insulator Boots are cheaper then the 86 items.
So if you can get a 85 plenum (like your cracked one) for a reasonable price, you might be in business.

    Looks tasty!

Pulled the trigger on that 84 lower plenum. Hopefully that will get me closer to running.

Then it's on to valve clearance, compression check, hydraulic rebuilds etc. Maybe start a resurrection thread

You should have a go at plastic welding,

Old soldering iron and a lot of patience and some ABS welding sticks off eBay

I have fixed loads of plastic on my FII even completely remade some parts
