I got 4700 miles now so I figure it time to take a look at the air filter and simply replace it with something better. I should be able to free up a little HP and get a bit better gas mileage, so what are your Idea's? How hard is it to replace-I would guess very easy? Where is the best place to buy one?:kc10:

Well it looks like the bmc would actually do something. I can get a bmc for About $67 and no shipping. I would like to hear some more intake sounds. There should be a little HP there with a BMC, a k+N looks like a waste of money on this bike. And I don't have to take off the tank on a 6th bike, it looks like they improve on install a filter over the 5th gen. It certainly looks like the 6th is better than the 5 th:eyebrows::tongue2: I tested out the 2 bros carbon and it looked like a free flowing air fliter should be safe to use. I wonder would 91 work better with these mods-=slip-on and bmc.The 91 gas might make the a/f mixture a little richer-then 87 gas ? Or is 87 really the best even with these two mods? A power commander would make the bike burn more gas, but would be better for the motorcycle. With my 06 I have not had any problems at all with the VTEC. If I want to go real fast -all I have to do is keep above 6100 after hitting 6800. So far I only use the VTEC once in a while.:smokin::laser::dizzy:

I put a K&N on mine years ago and to be quite honest with you, I did not notice any difference in performance. I won't say there isn't any improvent but I did not notice it. The only reason I still have this filter on my bike is that I still have lots of cleaner and oil. When that is gone, so is the re-usable filter. What I don't like about it, is that when you clean it, your bike is down for the better part of a day waiting for the filter to dry naturally. Of course, those in Arizona don't have that problem. But here on the wet coast of BC, we need a breathing apparatus to live day to day it is do gdam wet.

I have two K+N filter for my car. One I got for free from K+N due to alu tab that broke. K N gave me a whole free intake, but that has not much to do with the motorcycle. Drying a filter isn't a big deal-just pick a time when you don't want to ride it or save your old filter and simply use it as a spare. It does look like the 6th gen air filter is very easy to take in and out. But the whole idea was getting a little more power and gas mileage and intake growl. And it does look like the BMC not the K+N does that. The BMC Flows better than the stock filter and the K+N from what I have read. I want to change out the spark plugs too-a little tuning can help there also-I would bet-but that's a bigger project. Just like riding-I all so am tuning my riding- Today I would say, I did good, but I can do better. and I need to get those old tire off-still have plenty of tread left-but I don't trust them. I am use to very sporty tires-the M5 metzler:single_eye::saturn: are those special tires

Just my useless thoughts; If the K&N or BMC flow better than a "stock" element and the surface area of the filter is the same how is this higher flow accomplished? I'm guessing the filters allow more flow by having larger areas between the filter media which in turn would allow larger dirt particles to pass through the filter. Or do they use magic filter media that is less restrictive to air molecules? Not that I would be too concerned of their lack of actual filtering capabilities, it's not I'm riding in the dust bowl or anything. I am new to my VFR and haven't got to the point of wishing I had 5 more horsepower. LOL

    Bmc

Well I have been running the BMC air filter now on my 2013 vfr800 ( yes ) 6,000k's or so
I found it had abit more growl from the intake SWEET WHEN YOU TWIST THE STICK
Fuel consumption is marginally better for me around 20 to 30 kilometre per tank commuting to from work (80 k ) 1/2 at express way speed and 1/4 is car park shuffle
On the open road playing hard and using the VTEC 440k's plus??
Improved performance yeh noticeable but not something that is brilliant
Just a lot smoother less restricted I would say
Give the BMC a go cheaper than having to replace the OEM and cleaning is easy so is the installation
    Has my

I bought an K&N for my 2003, then got a PC III.

I emailed Powercommander Tech Support about the mapping and this was their reply:

Benefits are long term, not having to buy another one!

K+N is only a little better than stock, but it looks like the BMC does work best. Changing a air filter is easy on the 6th, at least that's what I heard-its a small mod but maybe better than none?????:ghost:

K&N filters I have read are not great for regions with dusty climates.

In metro NY I have noted on 2 cars that I can feel a fine silty dust on the intake tube behind the filter.

It's incredibly fine and it's probably not an issue, but if you have a lot of sand or dust where you ride it may not be a good thing.

Don't be delusional and think that the air filter by itself will make any significant difference in performance or power. If your existing filter is dirty and needs replacement get an EMGO filter which is identical to OEM and call it a day. If you are simply looking for better performance you'll need alot more than just an air filter and after spending hundreds of dollars the difference will be marginal at best.

Fine silty dust tells me the filter is not filtering too well and allowing dirt in the engine. All that silty dirt is running through the throttle bodies and into the engine.

In K+N recharger Kit there is special oil to use, I think simply spraying more oil on will make it filter better. Without oil on the filter more dust can get though. I would say in dusty area's you have to clean the filter more and add extra oil on the filter! Any filter is going to choke up after a while and not let in air. I have never used a BMC but people have said they can hear more air getting into the engine and it has more filter area. Just like a slip-on lets the engine expels exhaust faster than a stock setup, a filter letting more air in is going to add a little power, its only going to hurt the engine with you never clean and re oil it from time to time. I reoil the filter and clean it at every oil change. I also change the oil often. These are not put in filter s and forget them, these are reoil and clean filters-often!

K&N wants you to have dirt on it from my experience, cleaning a K&N every earl change is a waste of time imho. My viffer gets a yearly oil change I am ashamed to say, this year it may make two. My daily rider bike gets maybe 4 a year, every 2000 miles - oil filter/synthetic oil. An aftermarket high quality filter makes sense as the stocker is a hopeless piece of paper thats over priced. BMC was't around back in the day when I put this bike together, so I have a K&N and really have'nt thought aboot it much. Anyway, Cheers and happy and safe riding.

The more dirt that accumulates on the filter the better the filter is able to trap more (smaller) particles of dirt. The only way to tell if the filter is getting clogged is by having a vacuum meter in the air box, as the filter becomes clogged you will have an increase of vacuum. Not sure how you can hear more air flowing through a filter. I would agree with a previous poster that the increase, or claimed, increase in power and fuel economy are minimal. I have always thought if the filter does such a good job of increasing horse power and fuel economy why isn't the manufacture installing them at the factory?

They cost more and OEMs actually end up costing more because you throw them away instead of simply cleaning them and oiling them back up. Its a new filter, so I would guess its going to work better than the old stock one. If you look at the gas mileage people have been getting better with a Free flowing filter-so its not doing nothing but really saving some money and a little HP! But also you will hear the difference too.

Also of importance is filter efficiency (the ability of a filter to capture particles) and dirt holding capacity (how much dirt the filter can hold before its flow becomes unacceptable). This article compares several filters for a diesel engine, including an OEM (AC Delco) paper unit and a K&N filter.
http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter.html Experimentally, the authors passed dust particles through air filters and calculated filter resistance, dirt passage, and dirt retention.

    To summarize the article:
-It's true the K&N had better airflow/resistance compared to the AC Delco paper filter when new (about 27% less resistance). However, as the filters accumulated dirt, the K&N's resistance rose exponential compared to the linear rise of the AC Delco filter's resistance. So the K&N's resistance became higher than the AC Delco's as the filters became dirtier.
-"Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly 3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% [as much total] dirt." The K&N not only passed more dirt but couldn't hold as much overall.

It's not clear how important this is the real world, but 18x as much dirt passing through probably means more engine wear. I'll stick to the paper Honda OEM unit.

I would reoil and clean the foam type air filter at every oil change. Then your bound to have a top performance air filter all the time. I think paper air filters may stop the most dirt but they also stop too much air.

I just put the K&N filter on my '06 last night. My OEM filter was pretty dirty, and I found the K&N on Amazon, with 2 day Prime shipping, for $46, so I went that route. Looking at the info on the box, even though they are generic numbers, it seems pretty clear that it does not provide a significant increase in airflow. I didn't really notice much difference this morning, riding into work. Any difference I did notice was probably more from having a clean filter on, as opposed to using a K&N instead of OEM filter. Since I already have the K&N recharge kit, I figured I might as well get the filter, and for the little extra $, over the OEM, I'm good with the decision.

I previously owned a '98 VFR, that had a Power Commander installed. I bought it from my uncle, and he had a custom map created (i.e. Dyno'd). That thing would really growl and scoot. I do not recall if it had after market exhaust, but I believe the fuel controller really made a difference on that bike.
