Looking for a VFR750

    Alright guys, I have owned a 86 vf500 for awhile now and am looking to upgrade to a gen 3 vfr750. Is there anything about these bikes that I need to look/listen for when buying one that could pose a problem other than the normal stuff? I am trying to get away from the detrimental valve and oiling issues that the gen 1's tend to have and move to a reliable daily driver.

    I have around 3k to spend, whats a good going price for a early 90's VFR? I have been seeing about 2500 lately.
    Do these bikes have any major things to look out for?

    Just the regulator rectifier issues (easy fix) and difficult to find body panels. You should be able to find a clean bike for $2000-$2500

    You can get a good deal on a gen 2 VFR 700 if you can find a resonably clean one and say "adios" to VF problems.

    Gen 3 bikes are harder to find i think. For $3k you're in the gen 4 range, the ultimate development of the carburetted era.

    Thanks! Not pushed on time because I am going to ride the 86 until I find one, but if anyone on the lower east coast finds a good deal let me know!!

    Im sure I can find info on the rectifier issues around here but about how much is the fix money wise and is that something I can do myself? I dont consider myself an expert mechanic but I did successfully replace valves and springs on my vf500 so thats about the max of my mechanic skills.
    Also are these bikes like the gen 1's as to good body panels are priceless?

    the old one gets hot and burns up. there are no less than 2.43 BILLION posts about it here. The aftermarket replacement is around 1 bill and some of them have cooling fins.

    I could go look at it after you contact the seller, maybe shoot a small vid for you or whatever. If you worked out a deal, I'd be happy to store it in my garage until you could work out the time to get it. Hell, I'd do it just to hear the story of your ride back home and see the pictures posted up here on VFRWorld. FWIW I don't know the seller or the bike at all, I just keep an eye out on CL to see what's sellin in the VFR genre. There is also a 1998 for a little over $3000 that would be even more dependable and then you could be cool like me. ;)

    I am specifically looking at the 91-93 vfr750's , are there any really big differences besides stock body color and some slight bodywork changes?

    Also do the gen 3's overheat anymore than the gen 4's?

    Thanks for the help reg! If I can find a gen 4 at a decent price in my range then I would be tempted for it also, The body style of the gen 3's have my heart but I wouldnt mind riding a newer one!!! haha

    I understand there are subtle differences in chassis, exhaust, and engine mounting. I needed a motor for my project 3rd gen bike and was told by numerous sources that a 4th gen wouldn't bolt in. Otherwise, I'm not sure of any major changes to the positive or negative.

    I commute on my '97 in Albuquerque summer traffic (+100 degrees) and although it gets hot (like they all do) its never boiled over or pegged the gauge.

    Seeing that the gen 4 has the smaller carbs does that translate to better fuel economy than the gen 3's?

    Also I noticed that the gen 3's have more hp but cannot find the torque ratings, is torque higher in the gen 3's? I would imagine it would be but just checking. I would imagine that the speed of both are pretty equal, the gen 4's have less power but also alot less weight.

    I love the 3rd gen machines and have owner no less than two of them but for the difference in cash you really need to look at a fifth gen bike. I'm sure you can find one in the low three thousand range with a little hunting. The fifth gen is a vast improvement over the carbureted 3rd and 4th gen bikes in terms of performance as well as weight.

    when's the last time you checked Craig's list? there are a couple of nice ones on there for $2500 and they're relatively close.

    I most respectfully can't agree and want some evidence to support your claim. Is the gen 5 lighter than the 4 ??

    No new 5th gen VFR ran as soothly or better than a good-runninmg 4th gen bike cuz of fuel injection glitches, especially at low speeds.

    I tend to think of fuel injection on bikes as more of a development than a real improvement, but i may be skewed.

    I have a friend with a 5th GEN and his bike does not feel lighter or have an appreciable difference in power. You do feel the engine more in his and does turn in slightly quicker (which could just be a fork tube adjustment) and I would get along just fine if forced to own a 5th GEN but I do like mine just a bit better! I may be biased though.....:smile:
