New to me 2001 5th gen, approx 5,500 miles (100 by me) Question #1 I noticed something unusual= When braking moderately hard with handlebar lever AND foot pedal If I rapidly release lever while keeping the same constant pressure on pedal I notice pedal depress approx 1 inch- Is this normal????? If on both brakes and release pedal I don't notice any displacement change in lever (while holding same constant pressure) Question #2 I have no problem, but given that it is a 2001 should I preventatively: -Put on VFRness or heavy duty charging system wiring? -Replace Regulator/Rectifier? -Change to heavy duty stator? -Add mini computer style cooling fan to regulator/rectifier? -Is cooling fan worthwhile even if using upgraded regulator/rectifier? -Add voltmeter? -Am I being paranoid and were problems solved by 2001? -Anything else to decrease chances of being stranded with breakdown??? Thanks again to the "Brotherhood"
Brakes and volts I noticed the same thing with the brakes on my '01. I wouldn't the pedal moves alot, but I feel it. As to the charging questions; I'm sure they're lots of different ideas out there, but I have 74k on mine and the original lasted 60k miles. I replaced the reg w/oem unit and installed the vfrness and all ok. I do notice the voltage stays at 14.3 at any rpm over 3.5k except when the bike runs hot (traffic in the summer), then it won't go above 13.6 until she cools off. What causes that, I have no idea. Perhaps someone out has some ideas?
Cant answer the linked brake question - they drove me wacko so I ripped 'em off the bike. I do know on the R/R stuff - there where more issues with the 98-99s vs the 00-01's - if you dont have a failure yet, mbe just jump to the VFRness since its cheap and go from there? The bike is so low in mileage I wouldnt get excited yet. My R/R died at about 10k miles. MD
