Just added some LED wedge bulbs to the gauge cluster on my wife's new to her 96 VFR and I noticed something a bit odd. When I turn on the turn signals I noticed that the gauge lights seem to dim in sequence with the turn signals. The only bulbs I changed were the 5 bulbs that light up the speedo, tach and oil/fuel meter. The rest of the lights are still standard incandescent wedge bulbs. Does anyone have any idea as to why the gauge lights flicker when I activate the turn signals? I never noticed whether or not the gauge lights flickered with the incandescent bulbs so I'm a little perplexed. We have only owned the bike for about 3 weeks now and other than cleaning the bike and giving it a coat of wax, I haven't changed anything. I checked the charging system thoroughly when I bought the bike and the voltages for the stator and R/R checked out fine. The battery was replaced by the PO this season and the bike was not used that much this year as he had bought another bike. Before I took the front fairing off AGAIN to swap the bulbs back to some regular ones to see if they do the same thing, I thought I would ask if anyone else had experienced the same thing.
My son and I rolled the bike out of the garage and started her up to let her run for a bit and checked the gauges while the bike was running. With the bike running, the gauges don't flicker at all in time with turn signals. Must just have been a problem with low power to the instruments when the bike isn't running. STRANGE
I still have stock bulbs in my gauge cluster & I also noticed when turning on the turn signal at idle , the indicator for neutral will dim in sequence of the signal. Must be some sort of a power draw when the indicator are "working"?
When I switched the gauge bulbs on SV650 to LEDs I noticed weird things as well. IMO putting LEDs in things that weren't designed for them will always have unintended consequences.
