Buy the correct ones, and it's just a swap. 1156 and 1157 type bulbs are used, I put them in but they weren't bright enough for me, also with the LED turn signals you'll need a resistor or LED flasher. The LEDs will blink too fast w/o that change. That was a couple years ago, the new LEDs maybe better.

I wound up putting 50 watt 1157 tail lights in the bike, Much brighter, I like to be seen from behind by cars.

I've done myself the similar upgrade for my 3rd gen. I replaced normal halogens with HID lights in front, replaced turn signal bulbs with LED bulbs, replaced the standard flasher relay with the electrical one and just now I'm waiting for tail/brake bulbs from HonKong. I already had red ones but they were not so bright, so I ordered now the white ones.

I like the led bulbs because first of all, they need less power and they light much faster than normal bulbs, this means that the contrast with ON-OFF is bigger and is easier to notice (especially with turn signals and brake light.

Although logic would dictate that the white LEDs would be brighter, I believe, that given the same power rating, the red will be brighter. I think it has something to do with the light spectrum, ie. red LEDs w/red lenses, and orange LEDs w/orange lenses. The colored lens, say red, only lets the red light pass, and the other colors are blocked/filtered out.

Good point Nitrousva and same thing is confirmed in Stoshmonster's link. I let you know the result when I have the white leds installed.
Another thing is the that same bulbs are user as license plate light, so red leds need separate lightning for license plate.

Actually, they are all white, lens give the color.

Many of us light our license plate with light from the bottom of the center running lights by cutting out some red and installing clear plastic in the bottom in the rear. You can now get clear lens for the turn signals from Thurn, see below. I also installed an additional set of brake LED's wired into the brake circuit above my license plate for braking so the idiots see I'm slowing down.

    Both clear lens
