5th gen (99Fix). When starting her, as the starter turns the engine, she 'stutters' and the LCD (clock and trips, but not the total milage reading) zero's. This is a pain as I have to keep resetting the clock, and lose recorded milage.
Anyone out there got experience/advice/solution please?

This has happened to my '99 when the battery was at the end of it's life or very low. Check the battery, it may be time for a new one, or charge it up with a battery tender and see if you still have the problem.

Yeah...good place to start. Check for a loose or corroded battery terminal as well.

Same thing with mine changed the battery although I also changed the RR after it failed a few months later so not sure if one led to the other or which way. ?

This is not just a 5th Gen issue. This is signaling the end of the battery's life. A re-charge may not fix the problem. How long have you had the battery installed? A Battery Tender is just a maintainer not a true charger. It may work for a little while but if the battery is at the end of its life the only remedy is to purchase a new one. If you didn't buy one the first time, go for a Yuasa; it's worth the money.

Well, all i know is the battery tender did NOT repair my battery or bring it back from the dead. The tender only restores the battery to operating voltage in my experience. i personally wouldn't use it to "charge" a new battery with it...

Well in that instance it was just a maintenance charger, it maintained it right at a perfect 0v. Your battery was shot, i.e., in an electrolytic state where it was incapable of accepting a charge.

Charge, v., to give electrical energy.

    The End.

Thanks Guys, This is the second battery (Yuasa) from new. The first got 'fried' when the reg/rec failed back in 2006, so it has been good to me. I must be taking it for granted as all her other electrics perform well. They are a good battery. So, time to pay up I suppose. Sorry for time zone late reply, as I have been to bed since your responce.

Hope that solves your problem. Maybe try charging before you auto replace.

Thought I'd weigh in on the controversy...since I have much experience diagnosing bad batteries. The "tender" is a good product, but I've found a good constant rate (1 or 2A) charger is sometimes better, and certainly quicker. There will be times when it will make a good battery out of one that couldn't be "fixed" by a maintainance or automatic type charger. Rate and time should be on the label of the battery. One thing though...you CAN'T forget about it and let it overheat, or overcharge...you gotta supervise the rate and time or it WILL be a problem.

Sometimes I think battery longevity is luck of the draw. About five years ago I replaced the battery in my ST, which I know was at least ten years old. I bought a brand new OE Yuasa battery...kept it in good care with a "tender" and one and a half years later it gave out on me. In the meantime an ATV customer at work had returned a relatively "new" battery recently purchased from us claiming it went dead all the time...he had already had it in once (we charged his battery and confirmed it was alright). The second time we just replaced it for the guy on general good business practices. Coincidentally, it was the exact same battery as my ST...so I put a good charge in it and have had it in my ST ever since...that was over three years ago. Hmm..go figure...batteries can be really wierd.

Well, I fitted a new Yuasa and she spins up like a dream. You get used to something and dont notice how bad its getting I suppose? With the new battery in place I'm sure she spins faster. Anyways, for the last couple of weeks (since the new battery) the LCD has not once zeroed on start up. I did'nt go for chargeing the old battery, as I felt that normal running should have kept it fully charged.
Ok, Thanks again for the help and backup.
