I just did an oil change on my viffer and used Castrol 10W-40 (4stroke) oil. I also added a little bit of 'Lucas' Oil stabilizer for smoother performance. A couple hundred kms later I start hearing a slight knocking sound from the engine. Its not loud or anything but its in sync with the revs.. ie. goes faster when I rev more, and its just driving me nutty. Is this something I need to worry about since I never had this sound in my bike before. The bike just completed its 30K kms, so is there anything I'd need to get adjusted/replaced? I've heard of VFR lasting lot longer and 30K shouldnt be a problem... ??? Maybe I'm just freaking out... somebody HELP... !!! :-[

the well cared for v-4's are commonly doing over 100,000 and many a lot more! if this knock started with the oil change i would do another immediately with new filter and not use any additive. if you can still hear the knock take it to a honda dealer and get their opinion. the price of a rebuild is high so get it checked out now. make sure you have the right oil filter. most riders do not use Honda filters and could get the wrong one! hope it comes out ok!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I used an original Honda Oil Filter and its the same oil I use all the time. ??? One thing I did do different is that I used this oil additive that was supposed to clean the oil system up. I had to add this to the oil and run the engine on idle for 10mins and then drain the oil and add new one. Do U think its becoz of that? Will it go away as gum gets deposited in the oil system? Or should I take to to a Honda dealer asap? (BTW dealers here are known to rip you off even if there's no problems). Does adding a thicker grade oil like 20W-40 make a difference? :-[

I noticed by all the posts that you are very excited about your bike. you ride in a very beautiful part of the north country where many of us only dream of riding. i have seen the pics. most everyone wants the best or coolest looks, parts and pieces for their bike. (me too!) the problem is what you see is not what you get in oil, gas, diesel and coolent additives. even all the raving of multi-viscosity oils has since been proven to be less than what is advertised. if you look at chart showing air temps and what oil viscosity in your temp ranges it will show you should be using 5w-20w or 5w-30. if it is still warm up there first try 10w-30w. most engine damage happens on startup and the brief period after. thinner oil will pressure thru the system faster and dissapate heat faster in the oil cooler. i keep idiling and warmup periods under two minutes. ride the bike easy till the water temp gets to 160-180 and then you can ride like the wind and do it SAFELY!.............i would change oil and filter and ride carefully until the temp was in the 180 range and if the knock persists. get professional help somewhere soon! best regards............

Please post the name and description of this oil additive product so others may steer clear! call the company and explain what happened and what are they going to do about it. i expect nothing but try anyway! if this company has a parent company and you get no satisfaction from the first go to the next. there maybe a series of parent companies and someone might get tired of hearing from you and offer something. be persistant but calm and informing. if you scream and cuss, etc. you won't get anywhere. best regards!
