Hello all! As the subject says, I just got an '85 VF500f the other day since my girlfriend wants to start riding. Im tearing it apart to make sure (first and foremost) that is in safe condition due to the precious cargo :)

It has 17,xxx miles on it and appears to be in relatively OK shape. Here are some specific questions I have:

    1. The 2 mounting holes on either side of the fairing are broken. Suggestions on a fix?

    2. The silver frame has some rust spots on it and I want to hit is with some rustolium, any idea on the correct color?

    3. The rear valve cover has a lot of 'gunk' build up on around it so I suspect it may need to be replaced. Is the gasket a difficult thing to find these days? (I realize this is subjective but I thought Id ask). Also, is it difficult to replace?

    4. What are the recommended air pressure ranges for the front and rear shocks?

One other thing, the bike came with a new(er) clear windscreen. I prefer the smoked OEM look with the blacked out lower portion. Any suggestions as to how I can modify the clear one I have? I have thought of vinyl but not sure about that.

Thanks and I look forward to contributing some knowledge once I get more involved with the bike.

BTW, I had a '98 VFR 800 several years ago but she met with an untimely demise with a steep cliff...just now getting back into riding and will be looking for MY bike once I get the GF squared away.

    4. a) According to VF500 gurus...do NOT put any air in the front/rear shocks.

It is also a must to replace the grommets on the valve cover bolts. Even if they are not leaking, they are responsible for applying the pressure on the valve cover (the bolts are shouldered), and old ones that are squished down can let a new gasket leak.
    Mike.
