    83 rear disc swap info

Hello from the coal region. I was giving my bike a pre ride check today. I noticed that my rear disc has a crack from the outside to one of the mounting bolts. I have stock wheel at the rear and the bike is an '83. Is it possible to use a disc from a CBR600F2 on the 83 wheel? I have a used disc on hand and it looks like it will swap right out. Has anyone ever done this before? Any info is much appreciated, cheers.

Check out Captain80s info on what will work on the rear brakes

Unless you already have F2 wheels on your 83 and don't realize it (I'm assuming it's a VF750F), the F2 rotor is not even close.
Before I go into a long response about what discs will fit, please post a pic.

It is a 1st gen rear wheel as I stated, I have a F2 wheel here in my shop. Glad I noticed the crack, just want to go for a ride. After actually looking at my cbr wheel, I answered myself. Thanks Cap'n. If you can tell me and future readers what disc will work on an 83 VF750F rear wheel, please do Sir.

    Cool.

The 1st gen 750/700 has a unique rear disc. It is the thickest and largest diameter of all the 1st/2nd gens.

You can reduce some unsprung weight by using a 86-87 VFR rear brake caliper bracket and rotor. As well as any front or rear 84-86 VF500F rotor with that bracket.

You can also use a VF1000F rear bracket and rotor, which is the same size as your fronts. With that bracket, you could also use a right front 83-85, or any front 86-87 for a drilled "racy" look.

I think the stock rear rear rotor is huge, heavy and unnecessary. Most of your braking should come from the front. Also, did you have some rear brake dragging problems in the past? I can't believe you cracked that rear rotor!

Thank you Cap'n, Very useful knowledge indeed. I wish I had anything on your swap list. Saving for the DMr rear kit (I have a wheel, chain and sprockets now), he has the hub now and I am broke and without the swap kit.:sour:

No better time than now work on other niggles and show the ol girl some TLC.

    Thanks again Cap'n

Would I use the VF1000f caliper as well, if I were to go that route w the drilled 86-87 front rotors?

Any rear caliper is suitable from a VF500/700/750/1000F or 86-87 VFR700/750
