    Hello!
I just purchased my first bike (I have ridden other bikes for a couple years now). She's red and shiny!

I'll just post a link to the youtube video that the dealer made of it, and I'm curious if you guys can see any modifications that have already been done (Handle bar risers) or just anything at all!

Also, it has had the wire harness recall done, but I want to "beef up" the wiring around the alternator-fuse situation so I can save my rectifier.

Any comments are helpful! Just let me know what you guys think!
    Thanks!

Don't bother trying to save the factory rectifier, throw it in the garbage and get a fh020aa on the the bike asap. The factory rr is complete trash.
Save your self some trouble, cut out the factory main fuse, and wire in a quality marine gauge inline fuse.
Install the vfrness, and order the fh020aa and wire it directly to the battery fused in between.
Also the connection in between the stator and rr is trash too, you want to direct solder that connection.
Finally you need a voltage gauge to monitor things.

Here is where I picked up the rr:
    Shindengen FH020AA Mosfet Regulator/Rectifier
Shindengen is the oem parts supplier for most manufacturers and the fh020aa is the oem rr on the new Yamaha R1 and a few other new bikes.

As you can tell I have had my fair share of electrical problems on my vfr, but I have got it mostly figured out by now. My bike mostly lives outside and has about 45,000 miles of rain or shine commuting on it and I push it way harder than and touring bike should be riden, so it has aged a bit faster than most. You may be more lucky than me with the electrical system, but I would address the factory short comings before they become an issue rather than waiting.

Looks like a pretty nice used machine with a few extras. Are they including the saddle bags to go with the brackets?

    Options I see include,

    Saddle bag brackets
    Rear carrier
    Bar warmers
    A throttle friction lock
    Tank protector pad thingy

    Nice, how much???$$$$$

Completely agree you should go through and upgrade the electrical system to prevent all the problems that will happen if you don't. VFRness, voltmeter, hardwire stator+R/R, upgrade R/R, clean electrical grounds. You can find what you need at wiremybike.com.

What's that in the steering head bolt?

Seems like a super-clean bike with some great mods. That's the OEM heated handgrip unit. Did the purchase price include the saddlebags? If not, you can pick them up from the US branch of David Silver Spares for $417 and resell the brackets.

Thanks guys! I had planned on completely re-doing all that electrical stuff! I just got her home tonight and I took her for a short ride just because I needed too, but tomorrow I'm going to take her apart and check all the electrical leads and everything.

Question @candy: Should I buy the VFRness if I have the factory harness recall done? Will it still be a plug and play with the recall harness?
    Thanks!

(And yes! I got them to put the saddle bags back on her! For a fee of course.. ;)
I ended up paying around 5500 USD. I realize it's a little spendy, but it was literally the only I could find in MN.

Also, after first ride, I was idling in my driveway, and I smelt burn plastic/rubber. (probably not the best sign)

yeah definitely do the vfrness. mine is a 2007 and i have still had plenty issues.
it takes a load off the factory harness, it doesnt replace it, it just gives another pathway for the current to flow.
much thicker positive leads and many high gauge grounding leads. plus it gives the option of running the rr straight to the battery.

for the electrical geeks out there, with the vfrness installed and bike running. a multimeter showed roughly 0.15 amps flowing through the factory harness and 0.75 amps through the vfrness.

When you say "cut out the main fuse, and put a marine one in there", which fuse are you talking about, meaning where is it located?

    Thank you!

Hey Alex, congrats on your new score, I just picked one up myself same year.

Might want to check inside for some burnt wires if you're noticing that smell...good luck.
