    HI,

I just bought a used bike from a dealership recently and have been riding it for about a week when I noticed that they did everything BUT put oil in it! (I thought the oil was very clean, until I looked closer!)

    MY QUESTION:
I'm paranoid about possible damage. I notice that my engine sound has a very light tapping sound to it. Is this normal? Is not loud or anything its just a faint tap like typing on the keyboard. I can hear the sound when I idle or go slowly into 1st (after the engine gets too loud).

    WHAT SHOULD I DO?

    please reply!

Well, I guess you learned the "check everything yourself" lesson. Was it just low on oil or was it out? Did you get an oil pressure light? If it was out of oil I'd be leary of the motor. Most of the 6th Gen bikes I've heard have a very light tapping sound at idle but its hard to say with out hearing it. Have you talked to the dealer? If not, I'd talk to the sales manager and see what they say.

I'd doubt that there was NO oil in it, as your indicator light would have come on, and you would have serious issues and most likely over-heating.

How many miles have you put on it since you bought it?

Are you checking the oil level on the center stand or on the side stand?

+1 on what action said. Are you 100% that there is no oil in it? I wonder if something else could have caused the bike to consume/leak the oil. I pretty much would not ride it, or put oil in it until you talk with the dealership....as if it was really bone dry, your engine could now be the equivalent of 150k.....yikes....talk to the dealer, talk to the dealer, talk to the dealer....and if they are denying it, call Honda, call Honda anyways, talk to the local Honda rep and tell him the whole story. Tell them everything that happened. They (dealer, and probably Honda) will try and place some (if not all) blame on you, but be adamant about it, do not be irrate, and do not give up. A neighbor of mine went thru something kinda similiar (his oil glass showed full, but the bike seized with 2k on it) with his KLR, and they really gave him the run around. Do not expect them to just admit their guilt easily....they are gonna be like a guilty criminal and LIE LIE LIE!

You have oil - try this

I thought the same thing, but the way to check is in the owner's manual.

Start up the bike, let it idle for 3-5 minutes. Shut the bike off. Place it on level ground and raise it on the centerstand. Let it sit 3-5 minutes and you'll find that the oil returns to the sight glass.

Unless you follow this procedure you will think there is no oil in the bike.

The other day I glanced at my oil sight glass when my bike was on the side stand, and it was totally dry. For a second I almost had a stroke! I tipped the bike upright and the oil came up to the right level in the window....

Doesn't matter who or how many people here laugh at you or with you on this. The end result is you do not need a new engine. That sound just ducky to me. Welcome to the site. Stay tuned....eventually you will see someone post something equal that will make everyone forget you. Except me....I am perfect. Ask anyone here.:blah: :blah:

Don't feel bad. It might seem a tad silly but at least you did learn something.

I would also advise to never underestimate the stupidity or dishonestly of any motor vehicle dealer. When I moved back to NJ, I didn't have access to my tools (they were in storage) until I bought my house. The bike needed an oil change so I paid the $$$ to have a local dealer do it. They didn't do anything other than add some fresh oil & then tried to pass it off as if they had. They didn't count on me actually looking inside the fairing & looking at the oil filter. It still had road dirt & bug guts on it. Honda Powersports USA was notified of that BS. It didn't help & Honda Powersports USA didn't do squat but at least I tried. Word of mouth goes a long way, if you get swindled by a dealer, make sure EVERYONE you know with a bike knows what happened.

    KC-10 FE out...
