Sometimes after a ride locally there are some farms which leave crap over the roads( interesting, when doing 100 mph then round the next corner ,there it is!!) is it ok to pressure or steam it off my bike? It`s just handy as the steamer here in work is plugged in and ready to go at all times! I know some modern cars don`t like it around sensors and parts, don`t know about my VFR though?
JMO, but I don't feel that high pressure water/steam and bikes mix. I don't even use the car wash, just hose and water. I feel that high pressure can force water into areas it shouldn't be. A friend used to use the car wash to keep his rear hub nice and clean, then had his rear wheel bearing fail for lack of lubrication. May be no connection but it just reinforced my belief. Of course opinions are a dime a dozen, but you asked.
I think that just a regular old hose and water with a mild detergent (those used for cars and such - absolutely NOT dish detergent) is the best way to go. Keep in mind that all dirt (crap) is initially water based - that's why it sticks to the surface to begin with. It dries and hardens. By reintroducing water (gently) the particles start to lose their adhesion to the paint and other surfaces. By blasting away any dirt particles - whether via steam or pressure washer - I always think its like rushing the process. It will inevitably lead to the "swirl" marks that you can see on paint. Maybe not nearly as noticeable on a metal surface, but the same concept notethelss. I don't really know about how it affects mechanical/electrial functions; I'm talking more about the cosmetics. And besides, I kind of like taking my time and washing my bike by hand. Lets me know that I'm getting all the little details.
