    Hi There,

There are carpool lanes which go thru tunnel or ramp (1 lane only, like the one by 57 & 5 south). If it's stop or move very slow, is it legal or illegal to ride on the side?? can you get ticket for that??

    thanks,

    tony

ps: please move it if it does not belong here.

The answer to your question is both or more correctly neither! I know that I have split on sections like this and for the most part, since it is currently at the discretion of a law enforcement officer, its a 50/50 gamble as to whether you'll get a ticket or not. If in doubt, don't do it. How much time are you saving by doing it versus the trouble of getting pulled over and getting the ticket (with cost and everything that goes with it) is how best to determine whether to do it or not, at least that's the way I see it.

In any state I'm aware of it's against the regs to ride on the shoulder, which is I what I'm assuming you're referring to: "ride on the side". From my understanding it's okay to lane split in California, which is riding between lanes/cars.

I typically do not ride on the shoulder but use as much of the lane that is left between the cars and lane marker (line). Sometimes however, if someone doesn't leave enough room, I might slide out onto the shoulder and dive back into the lane. Here again, if a law enforcement officer were to see this, I could be opening myself up for a citation.

The only time I've ever ridden on the shoulder was when traffic was stopped and my exit was about 200 yards ahead. I'll sit in traffic rather than ride the shoulder. I don't consider it safe, and it tends to piss of the cagers. A lot.

not me I would ride on the shoulder too, but not before checking my now working mirrors. Mirrors are the best device to keep out of trouble

The PoPo frown on it too! Although I see them use it from time to time, I assume they are trying to get around traffic and get to an accident that lies ahead.

That's what I've always figured, but they could just be anxious to get back before the donuts get stale. :courage:
