I use a similar method when removing AND replacing.

This problem can be minimized by angling both the rear mounts slightly so there is a gap at the bottom where the screwdriver points. Start with getting left front lined up first, then work gradually around from there. Use a bit of brake fluid or motor oil on the boots so they slide easily onto cylinder head and carbs.

Also, there might be a very small amount of force used (as illustrated) to first remove carbs, then finally to get everything seated properly.

When I installed the carb assembly on my 500, I smeared a film of silicone grease on the cyl head tubes, also on the carb horns. I angled all 4 boots on the heads as vertical as possible, situated the carb horns into the boots, used a dulled awl to get the horns started into the boots, placed the heels of my hands on the plate, pushed. Surprisingly, the darn things popped right in.

This is very close to the Factory method:

grease the inside of the boots
tilt each boot outward away from the center
position loosened boot clamps in place
line up the carbs with the boots
    push straight down

The reason tilting the boots is key is because the spacing on carburetor throats is slightly wider than that of the engine's intake manifolds - at first - until the carburetors are fully seated.
