Has anybody had any luck installing a gear selector switch on a 2001 Honda VFR800. I purchased one off Amazon however the instructions are from China and not very clear. I searched YouTube however I can only find instructions for 6th Generation models. Thanks in advance!

Can you give us a link to what you're calling a gear selector switch? Do you mean neutral switch or speed sensor?

It allows you to tap into a wiring harness or the ECU and will display which gear you're in.

I had a more comlex DGV version of that item on my 6th Gen (so it showed voltage and gear selection).

However I eventually removed it as the gear selection was erratic as more and more elements of the LED display stopped working.

I assume the DGV compared RPM and speed to work out what gear to display, but as it could take a long while to figure out what gear you were in - it was not a great help and more than once I was left wondering where the phantom 7th Gear was.

There were vehicle specific installation leads available for the 6th gen VFR which made installation very simple. Basically it came with an inline connector which simply sat inline with the multi-plug from the back of the instrument binacle. I probably still have the inline connector somewhere in the garage.

While my 8th Gen now has a gear indicator - I rarely if ever find myself needing to refer to it to determine whether there are more gears available - I just go by the noise to work out when to change gear.

There are two types...... one has a male and female 3-way flat connector (for Gen5 and those Hondas with a speed sensor on the countersprocket). Simply unplug the speed sensor and insert the gear indicator in that circuit. There is one extra wire (blue I think) that you must extend and tap into the tach signal from the ECU. Yellow/green or Yellow wire should work on a Gen5.

The second type is for the later Hondas with a red diagnostic connector that is capped (for diagnostic tool). In that case, easier, it simply plugs in.

There should be instructions on how to program it, but it flashes "L" in learning mode, then "1" waiting for you to put it in 1st gear. When it learns that gear as you run it, it changes to "2" and you switch to 2nd, etc. right up to sixth. I did it while on the centerstand. I had no issues with it or others on three other Hondas. I ordered direct from Ali-Express, look for the pic of the correct connector, it will list the right one for your Gen.
