    Hi
My 2001 VFR has been playig up a lot ore recently with electrical problems, it's has electrical issues nearly the entire time I have owned it.

Last week I worked out that the power would completely turn off as if the key was turned off when simply turning the handle bars even a little bit to the left..... ( I assumed broken wires)

I have today striped the plastic off and found the problem wires which were half broken below the sheathing. The badly broken wires ahve been fixed but now I still have no power at all when the key is turned on yet I can make the bike run if I bridge the two red ignition wires. The VFR is my only mode of transport and I work for myself so a dead VFR = no income..

Can I safely ride around with the red wires bridged while riding or could this burn something out? I assume I am just hotwiring the bike but do not want it to catch on fire...

Does anyone know the name of the tool used to remove the ignition barrel from the bike? (Big star thing)

Can the bottom part of the ignition barrel be replaced? I am assuming that their are more broken wires inside it.

The switch does unscrew from the base of the key portion of the switch and it sounds like you may need to remove it and pop it apart to clean the contacts. I think it is a security torx screw (3 of them) that you will need to remove to get it off. No idea if you have this but a thin zip disc can be used to slot the screws so you can use a standard screw driver to remove them. After you get it off it can be disassembled and cleand but be very careful as there are a few parts that are loose after you split it and you will be boned if you do not use caution. A white pillow case is a good surface to work on things like this over.

Thanks for the Info Toe Cutter.

Anyone know the size of the Torx tool to get the ignition barrel out? I got one but it's too big.

    what a day...

Got the ignition out. It is a T40 Torx socket (the two big ones to remove the barrel from the yoke. I have not bothered with the 3 smaller ones.

I have rigged it up with a toggle switch. The bike cant be started without the key still as I left the control wire and the other one intact.

Hopefully I can track down the bottom half of tyhe ignition and swap it over. Until then I got a dodgey set up but it works!

Now to put the plastic back on....
