ideas for '84 vf700 restoration

I bought an 1984 vf700 interceptor at the beginning of the summer with hopes of restoring it to running condition. Unfortunately due to work and lack of funds I only got as far as stripping it down to the engine, frame and wheels. A friend of mind suggested I take it down to his house because his dad would work on it for free. All I need done on it is engine rebuild and frame painting and I can do the rest. I was wondering what else I can do to modernize this bike. I definitely want it naked and already I'm thinking new gauges, lights, handlebars, forks/springs, and suspension. I guess my main question is how much frame mods are necessary for new gauges and lights? Not too worried about forks, handlebars, and suspension. Any links to other projects and sources would be awesome as well as parts compatibility. Thanks!

Here's a modernizing plan....

Part it out. Take the cash for the upgrades you'd put into it and add them to the cash from the sale of the parts. Buy a newer model that runs.

Probably not what you had in mind.

Seriously though.... You made a tough choice as a base for a renewed motorcycle. Old school rims with limited rubber choice, small forks by modern standards, etc. It will not be a cheap project unless you have some good fabrication skills.

 

ok...if i did take that route, how much should i expect to get for the engine assuming it is in good condition? frame if its straight (which it is)? forks? wheels? Thanks for the advice

Engine:
There's a running example on e-bay right now for $350.
There are two non starters for $99 and $150.
Not any bids now, but you might want to watch them.

You can check out the airtech site they have all the plastic (modern) on the bike.Then you can change the blinkers I have put a corolla blinker in the tail and some neat on the front.Changed the mirrors and much more to do.
