Ok here it goes... I had a very reliable source clean my carbs a little bit ago (Thanks Toe), I have since tried and failed to design a fuel pump system. So found and put on A brand spanking new factory fuel pump. replaced all of the fuel lines exept the small ones on the carbs. checked and double checked for vacume leaks and im sealed tighter then a frogs ass.

bike was runnig swell for a little bit. I decided to change the plugs and purchased a new UNI foam filter. and now the bike runs (well for lack of a technical term ) like crap. It is starting hard and has one heck of a surge at the mid range say 5000 to 6000rpm. reminisant of a miss or really starving for fuel. but if i hit it hard she pulls just fine to red line if i want. and idels fine but now has a little "pop" in the exhaust.

So yesterday i pulled the whole damn thing apart again. Checked the plugs for gap, checked the wires for cracks and what not, made sure every plug had spark before replacing. checked the filter for too much oil, checked all the fuel lines for leaks, and rechecked for vacume leaks. richend the mix by a quarter turn and wallah same frickin surge. However a little less not much but a little.

So I was thinking maybe a cloged petcock since it seemed to be starving at constent throttle. So i was gunna check that tonight. Then I read a few posts that seemed a state something as simple as changing air filters from paper to foam will mes things up real good.
so if anyone has had the patience to read this frickin essay.. drop your two cents cause this Cowboy is flat broke.

    Thanks all.
    dwntwn.

Air filter is less restrictive than stock, that will cause a lean running condition.

You should rejet or at least shim those carb needles to get rid of the lean spot at 5-6k.

Well the problem has been resolved.... I resricted the flow a tiny bit with a little help from the fruit of the loom guys... Yup cut a tee shirt and wrapped the foam filter with it. A little experamenting with exactly how much shirt to use and removing the seat tank and airbox about 10,000 times. bam found the sweet spot. It'll hold till the OEM part arives on Wed. Thanks to you guys for the help. I just wish I didnt have to spend $50.00 every time I learn something.
