OK So I guess I will be check/adjusting my valves soon before riding season on my 2000 vfr. It has roughly 6400 kms on it and I have never checked them before.
I have the shop manual, but any hints or anything to help make it go smooth will help from you guys. I will also let you know on here the results when I am finished. !!

6,400 km's total on your bike? Wow. How long have you owned this bike?

I bought my second 2002 with 9,800km's on it at the end of summer to replace my last 2002 - I've already put 3,000km's on it (I put about 30,000km's on both bikes last summer)

No need to check your valves unless here's a symptom making you think there's something wrong.

Most people get them checked around 30-40k and then never do them again unless there's some sort of symptom they feel could be caused by it.

Not trying to laugh, but I am!

Your #1 job should be to pile on the miles, err kms, sorry.

That motor isn't even broken in, at this rate you might need to check the valves around the year 2150!

    This is funny...
Just ride the bike and be happy. No valves adjustment required at this time.
I have my check 16k and have not touch the valves until now. It is 84k miles

Wow, not many miles, it's cool you ride when you want, I get that. I wouldn't worry to much, you haven't got to the first some what required mileage for the first valve inspection. Go ride and have fun. just change your oil every year.

Seeing that you joined in 2009, and watching everyone relentlessly hammer you, I knew something was up. I was betting that you mis-typed the mileage or left out the term "starter" (valves.)

You are probably aware that there are lots of threads on this. The site search stinks, so as someone pointed out here, I use google and do such:

    site:vfrworld.com valve adjustment
    site:vfrworld.com 5th gen valves

Do you have a shim kit? Or are you planning on buying the shims you need after your inspection?

I hear that valve cover gaskets are a mandated item.

Did you have the inkling to replace any other items while you were working on the bike, due to age? For example original coolant hoses, thermostat, vacuum tubes, etc.

I am ocd about having a supply of extra panel fasteners for my vehicles, in this case the fairing pins and barrel nuts.

Thanks, I knew someone on here would figure out the mileage was wrong and help me.
I have a honda dealership close to my house and will be going in tomorrow to buy the head gaskets and ask about the shims. I am hoping they have some for shop use that I can just exchange for the ones I need.
I too have extra panel fasters. I pull all the panels off the bike every year so I can clean up and check out the bike and give it a good cleaning and check over. I replace the coolant, bleed the brakes, check and lube all the electrical connections, replace oil...... clean the chain.... etc...etc............ I have all winter with no riding so I enjoy servicing and detailing it.
Thanks again Knight for seeing the mileage was a typo and realizing Im not just a poser with a great bike that never rides.
It just goes to show, some people on here are smart and helpful !

Lol. Ok, that makes more sense. The previously stated miles could have been put on just by pushing it around the garage.

finally got them done tonight. I will verify the KMs when I hook the battery back up, I think was around 70,000 kms . They were all spot on except for the #3 intake closest to the center of the engine was .005 which is still in speck. I am so happy I didn't have to keep going.
What A pain in the ass job ! it went really well but it was time consuming. I want to know the name of the guy who designed that stupid air box too !

yeh the engineers don't design em for ease of maintenance. You could change your t-state along with the associated o-ring if you didnt already button it up. Then again, I am used to working on older v-fours, love that 5gen bike though out of all the FI bikes. Cheers
