I was passing a idiot car driver who decided to try and out accelerate my VFR (2000) as I was passing him the vfr was accelerating like mad then stopped accelerating although the engine was still running - I changed up and it was off like mad again.

The only thing that makes me wonder was - the VFR felt like it would have quite happily kept on accelerating far beyond where I changed up. Does this sound right for the rev limiter?

    Regards
    Paul

Yes. An occasional peek at the tachometer will help with your problem. I also hit the limiter a couple of times when I first got the bike, and your right you don't feel much of a drop in power before you hit it.

was definitely the rev limiter. I run into it sometimes since it feels like the bike wants to keep pulling and then bang, no more juice. Solve this by keeping upward pressure on the shifter. If you hit the rev limiter, it will shift up automatically. Just hold the hell on!

ps. that might be a bit advanced. if you are just starting out. dont try that crap.

I am extremely interested in hearing what rpm your limiter kicked in at. i have had my bike on the dyno and pulled upwards of 10 pulls and, although, the indicated redline is north of 12K, the engine stops making usable power at about 11, 750.....the drop off in hp from 11,750 is pretty substantial. please post.

Sorry, but I wasn't looking at the tacho - too busy making sure my gap was still there! I'll try this again on purpose and see whare the rev counter is - I'll let you know.

But thanks for the help everybody, lessons on wheelies and tech advice all in the same thread.

Absolutely the funniest thing I've read in a long time. Awesome!

I did something similar - but I missed the 1st to 2nd gear shift and bounced off the limiter in neutral for a half second before I realized what had happened. Had a moment to glance at the cager next to me when I did that - his eyes were like pie plates! Then I caught second and wailed away. I hope he enjoyed the V4 music!

I've only ever hit the limiter once before that - it was a 3-4 shift that I waited a nanosecond too long to complete. Feels strange when the bike is pulling like a freight train once second to gliding without power the next...
