Here's what I know about using a shock from another model and making it work. I did it with an Ohlins from a 1993 ZXR750 for my 3rd gen.

    1. Overall length, needs to close to a little over. In my case, it needed to be 345mm + 10 - 0. Doable on a lot of models.

    2. Spring rate needs to be right. I swapped springs.

    3. Damping rate should be similar to a little firmer.

    4. Travel length should be close to keep from bottoming out.

Overall, mu swap with a new Hyperpro progressive spring was close, but not exact. Although I had it rebuilt and gave the guy the specs, he missed. Now I have to get it rebuilt (actually found the right Ohlins, so its getting replaced).

So, its possible, as in Jamie Daugherty's 5th gen shock from a 929, but not always straightforward.

I see you've never had a Penske? I've had a few. In every case you can have them redone for most any bike. I bought a 8983 for my GSXR750 for $800. Two years later I got a Blackbird, had the shock redone for the BB at a cost of $260.(from Penske). The bike was stolen before I installed the shock. I got a replacement bike(VFR) and paid $300. to have the shock redone for that bike. Penske shocks are modular and can be made to work with most any bike. My Shock started as a 11"-7/8 and ended up at 13"-1/2(i think). This shock on Ebay is way closer to a vfr shock than mine was, it fact, if the eyes are 10mm? it may work without any modification.

Just trying to help out a fellow VFR owner.
