My brother's shop just bought a repo'd 2004 VFR with 2400 miles. I own a 1984 VF750F and now I'll be adding it's great-great-great grandson to the garage! I was looking for a used Fifth Gen or a Ducati (MTS or ST3) as my next bike, but I can't pass up the deal on this red 2004. I originally wanted a lighter bike. The 2004 VFR is about the same weight as my 1984, but I guess suspension design has come a fair distance in 20 years! It feels pretty good. I wouldn't mind more midrange power, but it motors right along when you keep the revs up.

What are the essential mods? I want a more exciting raspy exhaust note than the stock cans deliver. Anyone put Arrows on your VFR? How are the saddlebags for extended solo trips? I have always made do with a tankbag and a laundromat, but I have never owned a bike capable of racking up the mileage like this one. How's the saddle for long trips? Is the Sargent a good choice? Any other suggestions? I am like a kid in the candy store again.

Sargent seat is way better than stock, money well spent. Even though the bags are expensive, they are well worth the $$. As for the mods, I would suggest the o2 sensor eliminators. You can either go with the powercommander elims or go with the cheaper but effective 330 ohm resistors that can be had from radio shack for less than $5. I recently finally got around to doing them myself and it cleared up the hesitation from 4000-5000 rpms.

Thanks. The Power Commander seems the best to me.

What exhaust system seems to be the consensus around here - Staintune, Leo Vince or Arrow? Others? I want to boost midrange power and add a more exciting exhaust sound.

I have never heard anyone who has staintunes say anything but good about them except for the cost. I have 2bros myself but I don't like the way they did the 6g. Tori, just cut the endcaps off the stock pipes and gutted them then had someone weld the caps back on. Turned out well, way cheaper than new pipes and fit was of course a non-issue. I have a power commander as do many members. they work. I also have a sargent seat. it is way better than stock, and I think better than corbin. in comparisons between the two, most who have tried both prefer the sargent, but many users who have had only corbin really like them also... as to the bags, the genuine honda ones will fit the best and are really nice, but if money is a concern to you and you wont be traveling that much, try some soft bags such as RKA, etc...
