How to get rust out of tank?

    Any recommendations on what I should use to etch and get the rust out of an '86 VFR750F fuel tank. I just scored one on feebay and the rust is worse on the upper part of the tank than the lower. Should I just try vinegar for the first go around and see what that does?

    What kind of vinegar should I use for this experiment?

    After I get it relatively clean, would it be OK to red-kote the tank with the internal piping for the reserve/main petcock? Or would it possibly clog the intake pipes when I have the radiator guy do it?

    also causes little hydorgen bubbles that you can blow up with a lighter!!!. there are companies that refurbish automotive gas tanks and im sure they have something that would be good to coat the inside and not ruin your petcock.

    I have had a very good experience with POR-15 just google the stuff,you'll find a boat load of responces on it. I used it on a oldd GS850 tank
    I thought was set up for storage...alas it wasn't .Its a three step process,and if you decide to do this follow the instructions to the letter..
    .I would recommend another step...wear good protective gloves.....heavy nitrile ought to do it...medical grade or better.
    You will need a heat gun and H/F's is the cheapest around.among the steps they say the tank should be dry between treating.
    That's where the heat gun will come in at ...prolly save you a day.First step is a neutraliser...for the gas and stuff...second is the etch.
    I would further add that if there is heavy scale in the tank the hand full of nuts and bolts is a good idea.
    Another foot note is if there is a sending unit in the tank it should come out, if this is a Fi bike the pump will have to come out.
    For what its worth I used a bondo squeegee to seal off the openings on the tank for the pet cock and the sending unit.....just cut to fit.
    The actual sealer is in a half pint can...you may notthink it enough but it is more than enough.....
    oh yes any threaded holes that extend into the tank should get a good dose of release compound..you'll thak me for that one if you do it....
    Many sites across the net praise this stuff and more curse Kreme....I hope this helps you some the product is available on line and through better auto paint and supply houses too

    I guess the cheapest way is pea gravel and gas and just keep shaking it up for a long time and keep swapping it out for new gas... It'll get quite a bit out of it, but prob not as good as some of the other methods mentioned... It does it good enough to get going and throw a fuel filter in line and get riding, though...
