My VFR was in a crash last week and the insurance co. hasn't looked at it yet and I am taking it to the stealer for an estimate on Friday (on my own), just to try to keep the insurance company honest (if thats possible). Anyway, the bike doesn't appear to have any frame damage but just about everything from the gas tank up is damaged (gas tank, all plastic, left radiator, cowl stay, left fork and wheel are scratched but not bent). does anyone know at what percentage of value they use to total a bike repair cost/bike value). It is an 07 anniversary edition (NON-ABS) with 1050 miles on it. It was 23 days old when the accident happened.
in my experience, if the cost is about 79% of the value of the bike to repair it, the insurance company will total it.
Those numbers match my friends' experiences over the years with cars. Few people I know carry much insurance other than liability on the bikes. Too expensive of premiums, due to the high costs of fairing replacements when a bike with full coverage goes down. But then, they also try to buy a 12K+ bike with cash....
